Due any day and I'm sick! What can I do??

Woke up this morning with a sore, scratchy throat and feeling fatigued. My children have been battling this virus for the past two weeks. If their symptoms are any indication, I'll soon have a terrible cough and upper respiratory stuff.

It seems like we've been battling this same dang virus in January, March, June and now August. In March I thought I had pneumonia and ended up having to use an inhaler. In June I ended up in the ER via ambulance.

I am desperate not to get so sick this time! I'm about to have a baby!! Please, what can I do? I bought some drink mix packets that have 1,000mg of Vitamin C and 100% of the DV for selenium and zinc. I'm pounding the fluids, too.

Any other ideas? Thanks so much!

my doctor/midwife suggest taking 1000mg vit. c daily while you are healthy anyway but upping it to 2000mg when you are sick/coming down with something (stay below 3000 daily though)

otherwise all I can suggest is lots of rest and liquids! And fresh air and sunlight if you can handle it (its horribly hot out here and humid enough it might even work like a steamy shower!)

Thanks, Maeryn! I was wondering how many of these packets I can have per day. It's good to know to keep the Vitamin C under 3,000mg.

You are so right... if I get upper respiratory symptoms I could just sit outside and pretend I'm in a sauna!

I don't know if it helps you feel any better, because this isn't exactly an earth-shattering statistic, but it seems like I've come down with something towards the end of each of my pregnancies but I have never, ever gone into labor while I was still sick. I have had five kids.

That is very interesting, Nova22. My midwife said something similar today. She says that she hardly ever encounters laboring women who are sick. It seems like babies just hang tight until mamas are healthier.

Not that I want to be pregnant for several more weeks.

My midwife has also noticed a similar connection.

We live in a military area and its very very obvious that women get pregnant just before or after a deployment.... but if they are almost due and their hubbys about to come home, like 99% of the time baby waits for daddy before making an appearance.

What about a neti-pot to help clean out your sinuses?

Yeah I was going to suggest sinus rinses too. They always seem to help me ward of something when I start to feel sick.

I think Elderberry syrup does a great job shortening the course of viruses that I catch. My son likes it, too.

It's so strange reading this, because I have gotten sick the week before labor both times, and I never thought about it before. Mine cleared up both times right before labor started. I usually take echinacea when I feel something coming on.

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar can help!

FWIW - I had an awful cold when my water broke. But it magically disappeared through labor - no nose blowing or coughing. My daughter was born at 5am and it came back that evening. (And it was awful, nothing like coughing until you gag while crossing your legs and hoping for the best )

I'm following this thread closely because when I delivered my last baby (my third child) I was sick and it was awful. My kids had been sick with the flu and I had a milder - but still miserable - version of it. I came down with it a day after my due date, and dd was born 4 days later. I seriously never want to go through that again. SO, I have stocked up on Zicam and Coldeeze to prevent that from happening. I think both are zinc based and they seem to work for me if I start when I first get the inclincation that a cold/virus is on the way. I use them carefully - only one or two a day instead of the every four hour recommendation on the box. But I was surprised that no one else mentioned them, so I was wondering if there are issues with zinc cold remedies when pregnant? Anyway, PP, I hope that you feel better and have a healthy labor.
