can anyone tell me if this was an allergic rx?

Hi to all! I am posting this as a separate thread as my other thread for my DS is rather broad symptom-wise.

When I tried him with homemade organic apple sauce, he ate with happiness but after a few teaspoons he totally zonked out at the table! It wasn't gradual, it was immediate. I managed to wake him but he was totally out of it. Usually it takes massive effort on my part and my DH to get him to sleep and when we do we have to be as quite as can be in order for him not to wake up.

Also, he's had a few episodes like this before which we took him to A&E for but all of his tests (infections, viruses) didn't show any alarm bells. He wasn't eating any solids at those times though. He's been EBF since birth.

He also goes to poo every 2 days usually but it's now day 4 and no sign except these VERY loud screaming/shouting fits. I mean extremely loud and sudden. He is having us up through the night which is not normal at all for him, since the apple sauce. He also looks quite puffy and swollen around the thighs, groin and feet.

Thanks very much for your help and advice (in advance). xxxxx

I'm not sure if that was a food reaction...but I'd want to get him checked out. Probably not at A&E. I'd be concerned about a sudden falling asleep like that as a possiblity of seizure activity.

Thanks so much for your advice. It's quite scary when it happens xxx

Sounds like a food reaction to me. It's an odd one, but real! I actually just heard of a friend who does this and then read about it in an allergy book too!

There are some mamas here talking about seizures and food reactions:

I'd want him evaluated for absence seizures - might not be what this is, but it would be important to rule out.

And then with the hard to get to sleep, lack of pooping, I'd first try magnesium supplements, and then try taking out foods - those can both be food reactions. Apples first . Was there anything else in the apple sauce besides apples (like cinnamon, or something like that)?

True Blue, it's probably one of those unusual allergic reactions then?! Thanks so much for your reply.

Mamafish9, I'll comb through that link when I return from the store this morning. I agree with you about ruling out the seizure and I will call my ped about this. It's right on point what you said about the magnesium. I was up yelling in the night because I got a terrible cramp (like charlie horse) in both calve muscles, then the front muscle opposite my calve, then my arm and then my shoulder...all in the space of less than 2 minutes.

I have had this in the past, along with migraines, when I got my first fibromyalgia flare up. Magnesium, and a lot of it, solved this issue. I seem to be having a flare up again and I must be very low on mag. So perhaps DS is also low on mag too. I drank a big cup of mag tea last night and will again today. I know I must balance the calcium too and the ratio changes for me from time to time depending on what I'm going through. I'll also buy some CLO for the vitamin D so that I can absorb the cal.

I took out apple yesterday after doing a pendulum test on it (something I feel I am personally having success with). It tested NO for me, okay for DS through my breastmilk but a whopping big huge NO for him as direct food. I will retest him again today but I'm definitely not eating apples or feeding him apples for now. Thanks so much for your input

p.s. There was nothing added to the apple sauce.
