prescription meds for yeast infection

I'm 14 weeks pregnant and literally have had a yeast infection since ovulation. No kidding. Awesome, and words cannot describe how miserable I've been. My midwife gave me a prescription for gynazole but my insurance considers this a second line treatment and i need to use a first line therapy first, which is either Clotrimazole cream or Miconazole cream & suppositories.

Whatever I use, she tolds me she onlys wants to me use it externally. I've tried other natural remedies but it's out of hand. Without getting into details, it's really not good.

Can anyone point me to which of those might be the best to use while pregnant? I'm 14 weeks.... I can also get OTC meds for $3 (which I think are generally miconazole) through my insurance....like monostat or something.

thanks for any advice...

I was diagnosed with a yeast infection at 5w5d. My doc prescribed the 1% clotrimazole which not every pharmacy carries. I first went to Target and they only have the 2%. I finally found it at CVS and it was behind the pharmacy counter even though it's OTC. And my doc had me use it internally. It was a seven-day course. I wasn't having any yeast symptoms though and the only reason why I found out was because I had some spotting and I went in. It was just bleeding from my irritated yeasty vag and not from the baby.

Thanks, great info! My pharmacy is CVS so I'll have my MW call in something tomorrow. Did you find that one dose solved the problem? I'm nervous that this might be a recurring event for me...

When I was pregnant I did a 7 day dose and it worked for me. Personally, if you have choice between 1, 3, 5, 7 day dose, go with the 7 and do it ALL the days, even when it seems to be getting better. Then try to curb the sugar, wear cotton panties and change them often if they are moist, take probiotics too. That worked for me. No more yeasties the rest of the pregnancy. It helped that sugar made me gag during pregnancy and my wine habit was on hiatus . Sugar and Alcohol really contribute to yeast!

The only one that I found effective was terazole for 7 days.

My doc just prescribed diflucan, saying she thinks it's safer than the creams during pregnancy. I haven't picked it up yet, so I can't say how it'll work!

did she tell you why she only wants you to use it externally? i have a hard time believing that any well-established yeast infection (which it sounds like yours is, if you have had it so long) could be eliminated without applying the internal cream/suppositories...

she said she didn't want me to put any chemicals up near my cervix. My midwife is definately on the natural end of the spectrum.

She did mention diflucan - I've taken that before. She called in something for me, my copay is only $3 so I don't mind trying it - if it doesn't work I'll ask for the diflucan. I'm also going to start taking acidophilus to try to break the cycle. I don't normally do dairy or yogurt so I'm hoping capsules won't make me gag and might work. There is some sort of probiotic in my prenatal but I think it's for constipation? (rainbow light one prenatal)

I know the issue is not only being pregnant, but we spend alot of time at the beach in bathsuits with the kids, with no place to change out of them really. Not good.

I can't speak to insertion or not but I can strongly advocate for drinking 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar WITH the Mother (that's the gunky stuff at the bottom of the bottle) every morning and evening to help flush out the yeast. Shake the bottle well and put the ACV into a glass of water and drink. About 8oz of water is what I do and now I actually find it refreshing. You might, in addition to the acidophilus get some capricylic acid. This 3 part treatment have helped me be yeast free for almost a year after recurrent infections.

Good luck! I know how miserable yeast is...I hope you feel better soon!

it's not just earthy mw's who say externally only- where i used to work- on the highrisk antepartum floor of a major inner city teaching hospital- it doesnt get more high tech than this place, it was always only externally too.

eating lots of yogurt? non preg remedies include inserting a garlic clove and the old favorite, the cold yogurt tampon. i honestly am not sure how that is in pregnancy.
