Emily, when I taught Kindy in public school [8+ years ago], we used Saxon Phonics. I liked how it taught the rules and was systematic [sorry it's early here, is that the right word?
] The first three letter sounds it taught were /l/ /o/[short] and /g/, and so at the 3rd lesson they learned to read "log" 
I have no idea what the homeschool version looks like, if it's the same or not.
