need to night wean... soon

there are several reasons i need to night wean my son (27 months) these include, poor sleep on my part, aches and pains when i wake up but most importantly, he needs to learn to sleep on his own because i have begun attending births. the one a couple weeks ago, i left the house at 8 pm while ds was still awake, he fell asleep but when he woke up a while later he cried until i returned home at 2 am! i can hardly imagine what would happen if the birth was a more typical length. i have another birth coming up in a month or so and would LOVE it if he could go down without milkies... for his own sanity and if dh or my mom could help him back to sleep again should he wake in the night.
i am considering the jay gordon method, but am open to other ideas for sure. i need help! i feel really overwhelmed by this whole endeavor!
ideas, suggestions, anecdotes?

thanks

I don't have any real advice for you, but I wanted to wish you luck.

I am currently in the process of nightweaning my 26 month old. We tried to use the Jay gordon method, but in the middle of the night when I want to sleep it's much easier to just roll over and nurse. Also, I can't bear to hear him crying for "nah nahs".

The Jay Gordon method is the gentlest that I've seen. And if you do use it, I would suggest following it to the letter. I tried a more relaxed approach and as you can see, it didn't work for me.

I'm trying to get pregnant again so I need to cut back on some of the nursing. I think I'm going to switch to a "day weaning" process since I can distract him and keep him busy during the day.
