homeschooling resources in GA for dyslexic children??

hi,

i just spoke with my sister; she lives in georgia (cobb county/marietta). her little boy has dyslexia & is having an awful time in school already. he's only in the first grade & absolutely is hating school. he is being pulled for special ed each day, but they are doing this during his recess hour, so the poor little guy doesn't get anytime outdoors she is seriously thinking about homeschooling him, at least for the rest of this year. i'm in SC, so i don't have information for her regarding homeschool groups to her area, local resources, or whether my nephew is still entitled to his OT through the district. i did link her to the homeschooling laws in georgia though, so i don't really need info there as much. she also is interested in reading homeschool blogs, specific to dyslexic children. anyway, does anyone have info that can help my sister?? she is so upset and feels at a loss.

thanks!

Hi, I was just cruising through google looking for homeschool information and saw your question...don't know if anyone has answered you but I thought I'd give you my two cents.

My son is 13 and dyslexic.  We do homeschool.  I suggest a yahoo support group:   <HeartofReading@yahoogroups.com>

It's for parents of dyslexic children.  People can answer your sister's questions.  Also she will see two different programs that most people do with their child/ren.  She will be able to familiarize herself with the programs:  Barton Reading and Spelling and then the Wilson program.  She can go to Links and get lots of information.

Secondly, I highly recommend the book The Gift of Dyslexia by Davis and Braun.  Very informative and hopeful

Thirdly, there is a school that is for dyslexic children in her area.  I grew up with the Director of Admissions.  She is an outstanding person, with a dyslexic child of her own so, although I am not familiar with the school I would vouch for it because of her!  I will tell you that it is pricey, which might not be an issue, but I'm just letting you know.  Personally, if I lived in the area I would go and speak to someone at the school.  If your sister could only do it for a short amount of time, this age might be the best age...I don't know.  But they certainly would.
