Why exactly is MSG bad if it comes from a naturally occurring amino acid?
There are a lot of naturally occurring compounds that are not good for us. Like arsenic! 'Natural' =/= healthy

Just because something is "derived" from something natural doesn't mean it's natural. And, like Sayward said, there's lots of natural stuff out there that isn't good for us.

MSG is a neurotoxin.

A lot of people are very sensitive to MSG, and as the pp stated, natural doesn't necessarily mean good or healthy.

What they all said. I get migraines from it, so I avoid it when possible (it is really, really prevalent, though). Lots of good websites out there - like msgmyth linked - that talk about it and provide lists of foods, medicines, etc., to stay away from.

My sister has gotten migraines from MSG her whole life, and I've just started to be sensitive to it as well. Avoid!

My blood pressure skyrockets and I get heart palpatations if I ingest MSG so it can be very serious! Definitely not safe for everyone.

My understanding is that naturally occurring MSG balanced with other amino acids isn't as much of a problem. Added to foods or manufactured during processing, yes, avoid! I think it's the Truth in Labeling site that has a good explanation.

My sister actually has reactions to "yeast extract" which is added to things like Annie's products. It's a variation on MSG, but not as chemically processed, I guess. Like a precursor to MSG.

Yup, makes sense. Yeast extract is processed free glutamic acid.

Here is a good list: http://www.truthinlabeling.org/hidde..._printable.pdf

I try to avoid it but its so hard. As much as Id love to make all our foods from scratch I can't afford to so I use a lot of canned soups and seasonings because its works out cheaper. With me MSG causes issues with IBS and thats just plain no fun. I always know when a restraunt is using it without advertising. It also can cause my blood pressure to go up and can cause migranes if I eat it more than once a week.
