Booger Eating. So gross!

DD eats her boogers constantly. It's out of control. I'll tell her not to do it, she'll say ok, a second later, does it again. And again. And again. I don't know what to do. Is there anything I CAN do?

Will she outgrow it?

Ugh, no help, just commiseration. DD does the same thing, finger up her nose and then in her mouth. YUCK.

My dad called to tell me that he heard on the radio that it's good for her immune system.

aaaah so that's why dd is healthy as a horse

yeah they will outgrow it. i think dd was 4 or 5 when she did. i never stopped her or said anything to her mainly coz i noticed she didnt do it in public. after she stopped i used to be terrible and chase her saying here's a booger (that i cleaned with a tissue from her nose) eat this as snack so you wont bug me for food, and she would run squealing saying nooooooooooooo. fun times!!!!

i have seen adults dig for gold, but i have NEVER seen an adult eat a booger.

Mine all pick like crazy, but don't eat them. However, a coworker with this problem read this book with her 5yo and said it worked like magic to get him to stop sticking them in his mouth!

My 14 yo and I were having a discussion this spring about how much healthier he is than his peers. He has an awesome immune system. We got started because he missed no hockey practice from August through March while most of his teammates missed weeks. I think he missed 1 or 2 school days due to illness in the last 3 years. Then he turns to me with the cheshire cat grin and says all that booger eating really kept me healthy . He is now 14 and no longer does it. When we were in the thinck of things we thought it would never stop though.

Oh I'm going to have to see if the library has it! THanks!

We went through this with dd and when I think about it, I still get that "I'm about to hurl" feeling. And I'm really not that queasy. When I tried to talk about it with her at the time, she picked out a really good, put it in her mouth, looked right at me and went "mmmm." It was soooooooooo bad.

It went on for a while, but she doesn't do it now. And FTR, dd is almost never sick, either. Im not sure if it was worth it. Really, I'm not. But it stopped, without any other intervention than us saying we could.not.stand.it. and walking away from her. It was an involuntary reaction. Honestly, I'm really not sure why it bothered me so very much. I'm normally okay with body secretions, even cleaning them up.

I know what you mean, I'm sure the sick thing is true, because DD is rarely sick...lol I actually always thought it was because of the breastfeeding...

Really, I'm ok with other body secretions too! But I strive on providing her healthy snacks, not from her nose!

I'm pretty okay with booger-eating. I figure at some point the realization will hit her--much like the aversion to drinking our own spit once it's out of the body. The thing that totally gets me tho--she digs it out, EXAMINES it, then devours it.

Ugh, all I hope for is that DD does it on her own. Like, go to the bathroom or another room if you want to do that. I don't think that's asking too much... she still can't blow her nose effecively most of the time, so I'm okay that she'll dig a bit, even tho it's not great for your nasal lining (I try to get her to grab a hankie first, but as long as she goes and washes her hands then...) b/c I can tell it bothers her sometimes (it's dry here lately). I get that booger eating is good for the immune system, but I see it as like, you don't sit around touching certain parts of your body in public, etc. Fine on your own!

This thread has me so very queasy! Aaa! I've read boogs are good for your immune system, too, but I just can't abide booger-noshing. It really heebs me. My kids dug for gold at toddler/preschooler ages- I get up and get a tissue for them to put it in when I'm around. If a booger is consumed, I certainly don't know about it

I got my 5 y/o to cut waaaaay back on nose picking/eating by asking him to go wash his hands every time I catch him doing it. I'd say it cut booger related activity down 75% or more.

Unfortunately, I tried that method after he taught his 2 y/o brother to do it too. I haven't figured out how to stop the toddler from doing it, and of course since he's 2 he'll do it right in front of someone who's telling him he's cute--finger up the nose and then snacking away. Soooo disgusting I want to vomit just thinking about it.

you know, booger eating doesn't bother me at all. Of all the things kiddo could be eating, I think I'd WELCOME boogers some days... thankfully she has no interest in the nose beyond pointing everyone's out. She is very proud of knowing what noses are.

With that said, kids generally grow out of it. That or they learn to only do it when alone. It isn't socially acceptable to pick noses, much less eat what you score.

It probably DOES keep the immune system strong
