What do you think is a reasonable price for high quality used toys?

So I recently attempted to buy some used high quality wooden toys. I though the stated prices were high and looked up retail (provided a link) and offerred to pay half retail plus shipping for the majority of pieces on offer (around $100). Most of the websites offer free shipping for sizable orders and the shipping of the used toys would be expensive.

I thought it was pretty reasonable offer given that used junky toys in my area usually sell for about 15% retail on CL and far less at a yard sale. Things like Haba in excellent condition with box go for about 50%.

The person responded in a pretty hostile fashion that I was trying to "rip her off", refused to accept that the retail prices I provided were realistic (? I gave a link) and it got me thinking.

What would you expect to pay or receive for used high quality wooden toys in good condition? (haba, Grimm, fagus, etc.)

I follow the general guidelines I read somewhere once (I know, helpful, right?) of 50% or less for used items. 50% if they're in great shape and reasonably new, much less if they're not.

I would say the used price for nice quality wooden toys would be anywhere from 25-75% of the new price, all depending on condition. I would be willing to pay 25% for something that has seen lots of use but is still usable or has minor damage (like a small crack), I would pay 50% for most items because they usually have some wear but are in a condition where they could still be used for a few years then resold, I would pay 75% for an item that was in new or next to new condition with a preference for items that still have original packaging.

It's a lot for someone to want more than 50% plus shipping for something that is not in new or only out of the box once type condition. Your offer seems very fair. It's not your fault if she paid more than the going rate. If I paid through the nose for something I would still only expect 50% or so of the going rate.

I got a mint condition Fagus truck at the thrift store for $5.
You are not trying to rip her off. You made an offer, she refused, it's called business.

I agree with everyone else. I have been collecting some used toys in order to prepare for my own nursery program. I've never paid more than 50% I don't think. I lucked out and found that another MDC mom not far from here was having a yard sale... that was great fortune!

Check this site. Just leave the location blank, and it will give you anything listed on Craigslist for every location. You'd be surprised how often items are listed for great prices. The trick is finding someone who will ship them to you at a decent price.

Sometimes, you can find decent deals on Ebay, but that's more hit or miss.
Etsy has been my biggest friend. That and clearance sales on sites like Rosie Hippo. Good luck!

Didn't have a chance to read the PPs, but I sell a lot at a really nice local consignment shop, and the standard is 50% of original retail when in excellent condition.
You were totally accurate and the seller has unreasonable expectations!
