diahrrea

Hi Everyone!
I've never been to the pets forum before but I'm having some issues with my dog regarding diahrrea. I didn't see any other posting about this but I'm hoping someone can help me.
My dog is a 2 year old labradoodle with lots of energy although she is settling down a little bit as she gets older. Approximately 4 months ago she started having intermittent diahrrea- perhaps every week or two. On a totally separate note I switched her dog food from Premium Edge chicken to salmon because she doesn't seem to be crazy about the chicken (this was about 2 months ago). I often have to put other things in her food to get her to eat enough- eggs, a little bacon, some bacon grease (which I have since heard can cause pancreatitis). Anyway, that's when she started having diahrrea more often. I talked with a sales person at the pet store and she said that salmon is often hard for dogs to digest so we switched back to the chicken. She also suggested adding a dog type acidophilus to her food (I can't remember the brand at the moment).
She's had less diahrrea since I did both of these things. However she still has loose stools and she has to go in the middle of the night. I'm not getting enough sleep because of this.
Some side notes- she really needs a long walk every day and I'm not always able to give it to her. We usually throw the ball however. She has figured out our electric fence so I've had to put her on a chain- usually at the most 4 hours/day. A friend of mine says that she might be stressed because of these things and that might be causing the problem. Or she might be catching our emotions (nothing new but there is some tension in the house).
Obviously I could take her to the vet but I'm trying to see if I can figure it out first because it is so expensive!
Thank you so much. Collette

My first step would be to check a fecal sample. Most will run one without a complete exam.

I've heard that adding canned pumpkin to food can help.

There might be too much protein in the food, which can cause diarrhea. I would NOT be giving her ANY bacon, bacon grease, or pork products. Those alone can cause that problem.

You can add cottage cheese, peanut butter or eggs to her food. They will also make her coat shine.

I agree with the fecal sample. It may be worms or a bacterial infection.

Is your dog crate trained? I think a crate would be much better than chaining her. I believe chaining a dog is one of the worst things you can do to them. I can see how that would stress her out.

As for the diarrhea, I would definitely consider getting a fecal done. Of course, that will be a vet expense. Good luck with this!
