first time mom needs help with teething baby

hi, my DD is 3 1/2 months and i think she has begun teething. Any suggestions on how to help her through this process? Comfort measures? Things it watch for?

Also, is it common for breastfed babies to develop food sensitivities while she is teething when she didn't appear to have any before?

Thanks for any advice.

I can only tell you our experience. My son had 8 teeth by eight months age. He began teething at 3 months and had two teeth a month later. He drooled so much that he sometimes wore a bib to keep his shirt dry. It is difficult to look in the mouth so with a clean finger you can feel in there to see if a tooth has erupted. Prior to eruption I noted the swollen bumps, meaning a tooth was coming in. My son wasn't interested in chilled wash clothes but I hear some babies are. I did try freezing breast milk and placing in a mesh feeder, which I held for him, but he wasn't very interested in that either. I was hesitant to use some foreign made teethers though but did find a teether that I could chill and he seemed to like. It's made in Germany, but sold in Babies R Us here in the US.

Overall he seemed soothed by babywearing (which likely kept his mind off of his teeth too) and being with me 24/7. We co-sleep and he would nurse but he never stayed up due to pain thankfully, some babies do. That may not be enough comfort though for some babies but they may experience pain differently. Overall though he got through it quite easily for which I am thankful, we shall see how the rest of the teeth come in. I never medicated him nor used any homeopathic remedies.

We use frozen washcloths (helps too since it's a crazy hot summer anyway). If it's real bad (and moreso when older) we've also used homeopathic teething remedies, which have seemed to help with our kiddos.

If you're noticing signs of allergies (like watery, mucousy stool - which I'm assuming you're talking about, or being extra fussy while nursing or extra gassy) it can be related to the excess drooling and and discomfort from teething instead of a sign of an allergy. So, imo, if you're trying to ascertain whether there is a food sensitivity of any kind during teething isn't the best time to figure it out. (if it continues for a long time throughout bad teething days and other less-bad teething days then I'd take it more seriously, one or two days like that may just be from the teething and then it may all get back to normal without any changes.)

You might try a Baltic amber necklace. I was skeptical, but it really seems to be working. Ours was won from a blog, or else I probably never would have tried it. It's from Inspired by Finn

We use Hyland Teething Tablets.

As far as allergies, I haven't heard that, but a lot of teething symptoms look similar to allergy symptoms including butt rash and red cheeks. If it goes away within a week I wouldn't worry about it. If it isn't going away or gets worse then an elimination diet might be in order. The Allergy forum here is great if you need help with that.

Our DD got 8 teeth in the span of 2 months, poor thing. Here's our BTDT advice:

-Nurse lots. It doesn't do much for pain, but it's comforting for your babe to know you're there for them.
-Hylands tablets- be proactive, give them before feedings to avoid biting
-soak a washcloth in breastmilk and toss it in the freezer

A note on the Hyland's teething tabs: I started giving them to Cecilia very ocassionally from about 3 months old. At that point she wouldn't take the tabs directly, she spat them out. So I would put them in 2 drops of breast milk on a spoon and rub the resulting paste around her gums and on her tongue. Worked really well for us. They break down really quickly in liquid.

I second the amber teething necklace my son has been wearing one since soon after he started teething and I haven't had a problem since , except for the horrible few weeks when we lost his in the move but everything was fine once I got a replacement from inspired by finn. Also the lighter the amber the better they work.

i've never heard of these necklaces before- i'll check them out. are they safe for babies to wear( do they pose a chocking hazard?)

My necklace is also from Inspired By Finn, and it's designed to be safe. It is designed to break if pulled hard and each bead is knotted individually, so if it does break all the beads won't come off.

Cecilia's is also individually knotted, and made with a breakaway clasp so that if it's tugged too hard it will just come apart, rather than choking the baby. Cece doesn't even notice hers; it's tucked under her shirt/onesie all the time. When she's older if she starts messing with it, we'll just work on that.
