Hep B to apply for Social Security #?

Thread Starter
I used to post here frequently after having my DS. I have been away awhile but am lurking again as we are TTC and I wanted to make sure I covered my bases before telling my OB and Pediatrician all my decisions (and preparing myself to back them).

A friend of mine had a baby in June and I had done a little talking about vaccines but I am not sure she was all that open to discussing the issues. My only point was trying to prompt her to read before her baby was here to make an educated decision about her desires for vaccinations. Now that her baby is here he has suffered some problems with vaccines that I think have made her see a little more clearly the issues at hand.

Question ~ she was told at the hospital that in order to apply for a Social Security # for her baby she HAD to get the Hep B shot. I had NEVER heard this before and of course, know of many people who have had babies who did not get this shot...so WHY on Earth would she have been told this...just a scare tactic?

Even if that where true she could always apply for the ss# after leaving the hospital on her own. I cant imagine that having any truth to it but who knows the way things are anymore.

My bet would be on a scare tactic or an uneducated nurse. I've heard some hospitals threaten to not release the baby unless they've had it...Uhm, I'll fight somebody!

Besides, even the "official" word on the vax says that it can be delayed until the 2 week check up.

Weird that they told her that; some hospitals don't even administer hep b shots after birth.

She needs to file a complaint imo.

And yes, any parent can file for the SS on their own. Here is the website http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/

We've had two hospital babies, no vaxxes, and no issues with getting documents filed for birth certificate or ssn.

Wow, it's incredible to what depths of lies some nurses/doctors sink. Absolutely untrue. She needs to file a huge complaint immediately. Absolutely horrible. Where was that, in what state, city and which hospital? I'd love to know to avoid that place at all costs.

Scare tactic, and absolutely 100% untrue - both my boys were born in hospitals and are unvaxed. And the older ones starting Head Start in a week! Vaccines are *NOT* mandatory!!!!!!
