help me sleep

I first want to disclose that I have a couple of diagnosed sleep disorders that I take a small dose of medication for. I don't think this issue is related to my sleep disorders.

I've been suffering from repetitive motion injury for the past couple of months. I've been taking anti-inflammatories, seeing a massage therapist as often as I can afford to (which isn't often enough), and trying to be mindful of how I use my arms and shoulders (which is difficult because I wait tables....which is what caused the injury to begin with). My neck, shoulders, and right arm are pretty much in constant discomfort, but the outright pain is gone. However, I think it's this discomfort that is interrupting my sleep. The sleep problems have been going on for about three weeks.

If I sleep on my sides, my shoulders ache. If I sleep on my back or tummy, my neck hurts. It wakes me up and then I toss and turn. I have a special pillow but it's not really helping.

I haven't been to a doctor for this...just my chiropractor and massage gal. At some point I might break down and fork out the $$$ to see my D.O. (I'm without insurance at the moment), but I'm trying to deal with this on my own. Even Excedrin PM isn't keeping me knocked out. My sleep is interrupted constantly, and then for some reason I can't seem to sleep more than 6-7 hours before being wide awake for the day, which means I'm not getting enough rest to repair all the damage in my body. I'm feeling like garbage.

Any ideas? Any herbs I could take? I have valerian on hand that I use on occasion when my prescription sleep meds run out and I sometimes forget to call in a refill in a timely fashion. I build up a tolerance to valerian pretty quickly, though, and it stops working after a few days.

Have you tried Melatonin? It can really help. Magnesium can also help.
