pre-natal vitamins

I was taking vegan, food based, "gentle on your stomach" prenatal pills, and it wasn't until I stopped for a few days (because I ran out) that I realized they were what was making my morning sickness so completely unbearable. Second time around, I tried a different brand, gentle on the stomach, vegan, but the same results.

Has anyone had a similar experience Could it be that I am just getting way too many vitamins? Not to mention, while taking the prenatal vitamins, I was completely backed up, without them, I am normal.

I have stopped taking them until I have my first doctor's appointment this wednesday.

Thanks! any input is appreciated!

I had trouble with that too. I was able to tolerate a liquid vitamin a little better, it made me nauseous at first, but then it passed and didn't linger. One of my friends did nutrition shakes because she couldn't tolerate anything either.

I had no problem with the Deva brand pre-natal, but my friend was the same way and could only do shakes. She did the Vega brand powder I think. A great yummy way to get all your good stuff!

My prenatal vitamins (I try many) made me so sick! I was all the time vomiting. I end up just taking the gummy vitamins, they are not as good as the prenatal ones but how those can be good if I keep vomiting them anyway, right?

I don't know that they sell premade shakes, but there are a number of great [raw, food-based] powders that you can add to your own smoothies/shakes. =)

My midwife told me to take my prenatal before bed (instead of the morning) to help with them making me sick in the morning, and it worked. HTH

Which prenatals are you taking?

New Chapter (food based)? Vitamin Code ("raw")?
I used both of these and they didn't make me feel sick. They are taken 3 times a day with or without a meal. I also had a vegan DHA & B12.

I was not as crunchy when pregnant with dd1. I couldn't tolerate reg prenatals so I took the flintstones chewables that are made with sugar not aspartame. I chewed it at night. With dd2 I had a much healthier diet and didnt take a prenatal at all. I did take supplements occasionally if I felt I needed to. I like hemp protein powder in a smoothie. I have this powder brand ALL ONE Phyto Green that I love too (they have other flavors too). It is vegan and says it is gluten free (not soy free, but I paid a lot for it I am gonna use it up). I prefer powders mixed in to juice personally. I have Super Nutrition Super C powder too. I know I eat much healthier than the average or in fact majority of people. I think prenatals are for people that are getting their nutrition from boxes and fast food (like I used to). I didn't really feel prenatals were a must. Especially since my body told me through symptoms like you describe (MS, constipation) that they were in fact not good for me to take... listen to your body and make super smoothies instead (always put a few pieces of spinach or green in with the fruits if you can). You can put anything in it that you think your body needs more of and it will be absorbed better since it is in food.

I didn't take any prenatals. I made sure to get a very balanced diet (whole grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, veggies including lots of greens, tofu and tempeh) and included fortified non-dairy milk (organic soy or almond or hemp), probiotics (vegan yogurt or kefir), blackstrap molasses, ground flaxseed, and nutritional yeast. I took (and still take) a vegan DHA supplement, but that's it.

Mind you, I told the OB and nurses that I was taking prenatals. I figured it was none of their business whether it was food-based or pill-based. All my bloodwork and urine tests were great.

I was also going to suggest taking them after you have eaten something. Even now (not pg), if I take my multi on an empty stomach it makes me nauseous!

I was taking the DEVA pre-natal vitamins and had no problems. I was making sure to take them with food though.

prenatal vitamins work better when you are eating a healthy diet that includes a variety of foods. There are also known deficiencies in prenatal vitamins, for example calcium.Prenatal vitamins are a hot topic these days. Everyone is touting the benefits of using them prior to getting pregnant to help prevent certain birth defects.
