reusable bags as small garbage liners?

Hi, mamas. Does anyone use their reusable bags as liners for their small trashcans?

Is that a gross idea?

I'm trying to figure out what to do now that I'm almost out of plastic bags from the grocery store.

We don't, mostly b/c DH does the trash and he would have a fit if I suggested reusable trash bags! He's already compromising by saving bags and only using a liner in the kitchen trash. That means that instead of just collecting all the garbage bags out of the bathrooms and office, he has to take the cans over to the kitchen, dump everything into the kitchen bag, put that out, then come back and put all the cans away (which he doesn't do...). That's already asking too much. LOL

I use small bags from other things that would otherwise be tossed themselves, like tortilla chip bags or loaf-of-bread bags. I have 2 or 3 of those in the garbage bin and when they fill up I double bag them to put in outdoor garbage can.

We hardly ever eat chips or anything that comes in a bag that size. I guess I'll figure something out. Now that I live on the top floor, I don't want to stop using bags b/c then I can't just empty the trash on my way out for the day without coming all the way back up the stairs.

Maybe I should stop being lazy.

DH just dumps the trash from the kitchen can into the big can outside; rarely does he include the bag itself! So yes, we re-use those tall white kitchen sacks until they rip or tear beyond usefulness. Another great idea would be to use paper grocery sacks as trash bags, because at least those are more biodegradable than plastic. We compost, and don't eat meat, so most of the potential "smelly stuff" isn't an issue for us.

We recycle almost all of our plastic bags: like cereal bags, chip bags, bread bags, etc. Also use them for scooping kitty litter, and then those go directly into the trash.
