so, i'm psyched about the following up-cycling projects that i'm setting up for my home and business. i thought i would share, and perhaps you could share what you are up-cycling!
For home:
Right now, one of the kitchen counters is getting very cluttered with jars. we use them for soaking, sprouting, and fermenting, and some are in use and some are clean and ready to be used. but, they take up a lot of space on the counter, and i don't want that. so, i need some kind of shelves.
I found these Pallet Hack Shelves -- by the by, this is one of my favorite new blogs
-- and as hers can hold wine bottles, i figured that mine could manage the jars that i have, most of which are narrower than wine bottles. I'm also thinking of painting some and using them as magazine/book racks at the business.
Pallet Hack Planter for my indoor kitchen garden (window box) that i want to have for herbs. I might also make a few more to put in my outdoor space (garden) so that i don't actually have to clean out the garden itself at this point (not an easy job, and who knows the quality of the soil?). so, i'm thinking of making a few more to plant veggies, flowers, and herbs this spring. might be fun.
For my business, i need a lot of different things, but so far we are starting with an up-cycling project: taking old shelves, painting them white, and using them as cubbies for people's shoes/bags and such for yoga classes. one book shelf makes 8 cubbies, so that's not bad for free (well, less the cost of the paint, but i am getting an eco-friendly paint, so that is nice).
second project for the business is making re-useable face-cradle covers for the massage chairs. we use disposable ones currently (which disturbs me on so many levels--not to mention the waste of money!), and i came up with a design with a friend to make draw string, reusable ones out of old t-shirts. we asked the play group, the practitioners of the business, and some of our clients to bring in old t-shirts, so that we can make them into these covers. looks like one shirt might give us 4 covers (at least two), and, i can use the remaining bits for rags (as i do need some family cloth).
After this project, i want to make lockers for each of the massage chairs, and i'm looking for potential scrap wood from which to make it. who knows what i will find, but i'm good at finding these things, as is another friend of mine.
so those are my up cycling projects, what are yours?
