16-month-old slightly anemic - suggestions?

At his 15mon WBC, the pedi checked Jacob's iron levels since he's still mostly breastfed (he will eat when he feels like it, as much as he feels like eating, of whatever we offer that he actually WANTS to eat) and he was just barely low - 9.5 (she said normal was 10.5-12).

She told me to get an iron supplement, and liquid vits... but I was unimpressed with the iron in the supplements (not readily absorbed by the human body) and instead got some Floradix.

He will take a few tastes of it when I remember to give it to him, but nowhere near a "dose" (of 5ml).

I have increased the amount of red meat I offer him, and have been trying to make more kale and spinach and other iron-rich foods... but my worry is that his pedi will scold me when we go in for his 18mon WBC.

So... suggestions? Keep in mind that we are doing child-led eating and I won't force-feed him anything he won't eat. And that holding him down and forcing Floradix into him doesn't sound pleasant for either of us.

Thanks!

My DD was slightly anemic (shown on heel stick) and in her case it turned out to be macrocytic anemia, which is related to B12 deficiency, not iron deficiency. Hers was determined on a CBC Chem panel blood test. The numbers weren't very much off, but the overall trend in the numbers was exactly the pattern that's found in macrocytic anemia. Does he have any other signs of B12 deficiency like pale or bluish inside bottom eyelids, pale or bluish lips, chapped or cracked lips, ataxia, blood sugar issues, very easily overwhelmed/set off?

He truly doesn't seem at all anemic, to me... he's not pale, no cracked lips, no ataxia... blood sugar issues run in our family, and honestly I don't know how easily he's set off... he's my first child. I'm not sure of how toddlers normally react to being told 'no,' but I don't think he's much different from normal toddlers - dramatic. :P

But to me, he doens't SEEM sick at all, kwIm?

I still think that B12 is such a common deficiency (even if it's not severely deficient) that I think it's worth doing a urine MMA test for it. MMA methylmalonic acid is a really good indictor of B12 in the body. But it might not be related to his anemia. Just my two cents! My daughter is much more chill about being told no now that we have addressed her deficiency, but that might just be her.

I will ask his pedi about it and see if she agrees or is interested in trying. She's generally pretty good about going along with most of my strange, crunchy stuff. Thanks!
