How many poopy diapers first week?

I seem to have no memory of ds1's first week, and I'm wondering if ds2 is doing ok.

Today is day 4. My milk came in yesterday, and I've had plenty of colostrum since the first moment. Ds2 has plenty of wet diapers (5+), but yesterday (day 3) he only had one poopy diaper (around 3am, and it still had a lot of meconium in it) - it was a good size one. No poopy diaper since then - so that's 24 hours. I'm wondering if he's pooped all the meconium out (he had 4 or 5 poopy diapers since birth), and now his tummy is transitioning? He seems to grimace/cry when he needs to fart, and his farts are so stinky.

Kellymom and other sites say, one poopy diaper per day of life, so yesterday he had only had 1 - how concerned should I be. No poops yet today.
Also, his birthweight was 6lb 5oz...so not a big baby to begin with.

I'm going to call his Ped just in case, but I'm not sure if they're working today or not, so please, any advice?

mine pooped like every diaper change, she was a pooping machine!

However, what I remember is that breastfeeding kiddos can go awhile not pooping so the poops per day of life isn't a hard and fast rule.

Starting at day 4 or 5, mine started to poop once every 5 days. Mainstream ped and HB midwife both said this is fine. As long as child is making wet diapers, gaining and doesn't seem to be in pain, its just your LO processing your milk super efficiently.

thanks...kellymom says to call the ped for only ONE poopy diaper per day during the first week, so I got a little concerned. He did just poop, and then peed on me when I was changing that diaper (gotta love boys)...and that poop is looking a lot like a bf baby's poop should look...so I think he's ok. I just don't remember what ds1 did...I probably should have written it down to keep as a reference!

He does seem to have a hard time farting (he'll cry), but I think he's probably just getting used to using his bowels...definitely this poop didn't look like constipation was possible.

I would investigate. The number of poops is a really important barometer of whether baby is getting enough milk. Relatively few poops can be totally normal for an older BF baby but for an EBF newborn, multiple daily BMs are normal.

nak

I think that might be dated information as most publications I've read recently sat 8 times a day to once a week is normal range. My son pooped 5 times a day and i had low supply and had to supplement. this one? once every 5 days and is gaining over an ounce a day since day 5.

I do think if weight gain/health is an issue, its something to be looked at, but i also feel infrequent stooling can be in the range of normal.

I was hoping for another poop today, but only 1 so far today.

I have a scale and it looks like ds2 is 6lb 9oz today...granted this is a different scale, but it seems like he's gained 4oz since birth (Thursday). So apart from the weight gain, are there any other issues with only 1 poop / day? The ped wasn't working today, so I'll call tomorrow for sure.

Wow! thats great that shes up past birth weight already! WTG!

The other concern would be intestinal blockage/constipation.

Something to look into would be probiotics for you. Esp if you were in a hospital for birth/received meds of any kind, you may need a little gut help that will in turn help your wee one poo. I did this when dd seemed really gassy and it helped a lot.

Thanks! This evening, he had a really big poopy diaper and then another one after a few hours which was small but exactly what it should look like ... mustardy yellow grainy bf baby poop.
What probiotics do you give your lo? I did have a hospital birth, but no meds at all. I've read good things about doing probiotics for babies...but I'm a little on the fence about giving ds anything apart from bm. I've used Jarrodophilus for myself when pregnant...but not sure about what is good for babies.

Just take some Jarro yourself, no need for babe directly unless you are seeing major digestive issues or they need antibiotics for any reason.
