Thyroid & adrenal problems, supplements, nursing & detox questions.

Via these forums I decided to read The Mood Cure and now strongly suspect that I have both thyroid and adrenal issues. We don't have health insurance and can't afford a doctor's visit and treatment, so I've been doing research non-stop and have decided that I will try supplementation before taking any other steps.

Here's my short bio/med history. I have always lived in a land-locked area, so never ate sea food regularly and always had a diet very high in grains (like 60-70% of my calories). I have always been somewhat overweight, low energy and have struggled with candida and acne since puberty (probably due to my sugar addiction). Fully vaxed (and then some for international travel before I knew any better, probably have parasites from the travels too), analgram fillings, the works. I also have never gotten diagnosed with anemia, but the Red Cross never lets me donate blood because I don't pass their tests.

Got pregnant very easily when I was 24, had a natural birth in the hospital, no issues with breastfeeding except maybe low supply (she nursed every 30 minutes until she was 5 months, but that could have been something else because she was also colicky). I didn't take prenatals regularly during pregnancy, stopped after I gave birth and switched to a mostly traditional foods diet about a year and a half ago. I have a family history of hypothyroidism and breast cancer.

Over the past six months my energy has plummeted, no matter how much sleep I get. I am moody, react easily with anger, just not very pleasant with DH and Ladybug no matter how hard I try. I've been wanting to wean, but she very much still needs it. We're only nursing once a day, but even that seems too much for me to handle. I'm determined, however, not to wean for at least another six months because I know that she's not ready yet. I'm rather worried about detoxing, however, so anyone who is familiar with these supplements/quantities please comment!

Here's my supplementation plan:
Dr. Ron's Doc's Best For now, I'm planning on the full dose of 6 capsules a day, hopefully I can cut down sooner rather than later because it's very expensive. This and the Garden of Life are the only multivitamins that I trust.

Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Blue Ice brand. Not sure how much of this to take. The bottle says 2 mL, should I take more?

Cal-Mag from Dr. Ron's
Not sure about the dosage, however.

Iodine, Lugol's quantities, probably also through Dr. Ron's since the pill is so easy to take.

Sea veggies

L-tyrosine: 500-1000 mg

Chromium, for the sugar cravings; not sure how much I need

I'm also considering:

Freeze dried organs
, for when I don't get enough organ meats (though, I eat liver usually once a week)
Freeze dried thyroid and maybe adrenals.

At some point, I will probably go on the GAPS diet, but that's a bit too much for me right now. I am considering, however, going grain free at least for a while to see if that helps get my energy up.

Thoughts on these? Anything else I may be missing?

TIA!!!

Stay away from that product. Lipoic acid mobilizes mercury and arsenic, quite a bit. It's not compatible with breastfeeding and it shouldn't be taken once a day (or 2 or 3x/day) regardless. I hate that there is no warning on products with lipoic acid.

If you're willing to look into another couple of vitamin brands, I've used Perque and Thorne quite a bit in my path to good health. They have good forms of vitamins and minerals and Thorne has real folate, not folic acid. Something to think about with a family history of cancer--folate consumption has an inverse relationship with cancer risk oftentimes (across populations, of course) and some people need more folate than others, due to a fairly common gene variant. And they need real folate.

Cutting out gluten, at a minimum, would be a good place to start, and considering other common food intolerances like dairy and soy and eggs.

I wish I had looked into cell salts earlier, there's a thread here in H&H about them. They've reduced the supplements I need to take and I've been able to cut a couple of my kids' supps by half just due to starting bioplasma.

I really like the Price/TF model of nutritious eating, but I've got to say that, for me, as an adult, focusing on the fat soluble vitamins hasn't been a big part of getting better (my thyroid and adrenals were pretty shot a few years ago). Minerals have helped, a high-dose regular multivit that had more water soluble vitamins than fat soluble helped, and cutting out my food intolerances helped. One thing that has helped some people feel noticeably better is getting their vitamin D to a good level. I don't think it's a significant factor for me, but it seems like most people need to use a stand-alone vitD supp in addition to a CLO to make up the deficiency (most people seem more deficient in D than A).

You mentioned amalgams, do you think that is playing a significant role in your current health situation? Although they played a pivotal role in my health problems, they don't for everyone, some people deal with the mercury they release quite well. For me, I went the traditional route of weaning and amalgam removal and I've been very happy with the results. Others choose not to remove the amalgams for many reasons, one biggie being that you should wean and then allow a solid chunk of time before you TTC.

Thanks for this! I didn't ignore your response, but I wanted to look some things up and think about it before responding.

I've been doing research and I think the small amount is okay.

That's very good to know. I actually try to eat plenty of greens and supplement with nutritional yeast too.

Do you have the link to the thread, I haven't been able to find it. And do you mean homeopathic bioplasma or something different?

Yes, this is a major issue for me. But, it's not in our budget. I don't know if it ever will be. We barely have enough money to eat well and buy supplements, let alone for major procedures like that.

Thanks again!

Just be aware you're taking a risk, a lot of people with heavy metal issues have gotten sicker by taking ALA improperly. I started taking 50mg of ALA (not R-ALA, which I understand mobilizes more metals than just plain ALA) and it had a very strong impact on me. If I'd been taking it only 1x/day, I would've ended up with mood issues that would've taken months to resolve. I did a lot of work so that the 50mg dose was an okay dose for me and it's been a huge part of why I'm a lot healthier now, but I did it very carefully. Andy Cutler's writings are the place to read if you haven't already.

Some people need 2x the RDA, and getting 800 mcg of folate every single day usually requires active planning.

Yes it's homeopathic, let me see if I can find the link....

If you aren't planning to get your amalgams removed, you may want to Search for Panserbjorne's old posts, she's kept hers and still made a LOT of progress in getting healthier.
