whooping cough, a toddler, and a baby

Thread Starter
We are expecting baby #2 in November, and have not yet vaccinated our 2 y.o. daughter. Our pediatrician is great, and not pushy about shots at all. I asked him if there are any shots that dd needs, to protect the new baby, and dtap is the only one he recommended, because of whooping cough. Question: if I get a booster, after the baby is born, will I pass on an immunity to the baby through breastfeeding? If so, should I still get the dtap shots for my toddler? We are not totally against a single vax for our dd, if it's in the best interest of her baby sibling, since she has passed the 2 year mark. I just want to make an informed and thoughtful decision.

Breastfeeding on demand, eating pure foods yourself, cosleeping... all of these are immune boosters. the ingredients that are dangerous in the vax are still there. Here is a table of the ingredients http://drtenpenny.com/Documents/DTaP...nts%283%29.pdf Injecting known carcinogens or poisons into a human doesn't sound like a good idea to me... JMO getting an injection while pregnant is a very dangerous thing to do IMO and may lead to miscarriage, still birth, or affect the fetus in many different ways, like the reproductive system. All vaccines are dangerous IMO and should be avoided. I do not believe they work. I do believe they are more likely to create the condition they are meant to prevent. I do believe the mass vaccination campaign is part of a global depopulation program. I do believe sterility is caused by some vaccines. These are all my opinions after much reading and research. This site is a very good site. http://drtenpenny.com/default.aspx

Everyone catches WC every 3-10 years or so, so you're probably already immune. If you aren't immune, because it has been a long while since you were exposed to WC, the vax won't help you create a sterilizing immune response to pertussis.

It seems that with WC, if you want to protect the infant from a really bad case, you should vax the infant directly. The DTaP doesn't prevent infection (unlike, say, the measles vax and chickenpox vax), and there's no evidence the DTaP prevents or reduces transmission.
There IS good evidence that it makes cases in early childhood/infancy milder.

If we were talking about the measles vax, I'd say, yes, vaccinate the older kid to protect the baby. But the WC vaccine doesn't work the same way. Vaccinating the older kid or yourself is very unlikely to help the noob. The new baby needs to be vaxed itself if you want protection from a bad case.

Getting immunized does not make you immune to the bacteria. Its a toxoid vaccine. It makes you immune to the toxin the bacteria produces. The toxin is an irritant and it makes you cough.
You can still be a carrier of the bacteria just asymptomatic. If you are asymtomatic you wont be coughing so you wont be spreading it as much but its present in your secretions and you can still spread it.

FROM ADACEL site

Side effects to Adacel vaccine include injection site pain, redness, and swelling; headache, body ache, tiredness, and fever. Tell your doctor if you have ever experienced a severe brain disorder, such as encephalopathy (altered consciousness) or Guillain-Barré syndrome (severe muscle weakness), after a previous dose of a tetanus toxoid- or pertussis-containing vaccine. Other side effects may occur. Vaccination with Adacel vaccine may not protect all people receiving the vaccine.

Wow.... that's a bold statement.

OP- It sounds like your doctor is really reasonable. If he thinks it's what's best for your child, I'd probably take his advice. And BTW, yes your immunity to pertussis will be passed on to your baby as long as s/he is breastfeeding. Good luck, whatever your decision!

That most certainly is a bold statement and I second that. Watch the Global Vaccine Agenda (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7_xfUV4kSo). The correlation between pharmaceuticals and the so-called charities was a real eye opener.

I had to delete half my post! I got two threads mixed up.

If your gonna get your toddler vaxed you might as well go all the way and make sure everyone else in the house has their boosters & that no one comes to visit who hasn't been up to date. Don't leave the house until your infant has had all of its WC shotssot thats 6 mo right! In my mind its all or nothing!
