soft tiles for playroom?

Mods, I couldn't figure out where to put this, so please move it if there's a better place.

We need to replace the 30 year old carpet in our playroom, and our son is allergic to dust. We want a low-cost easy-care reasonably soft alternative. Suggestions?

Do you know anything about the toxicity of the interlocking soft tiles? Is it okay to use those directly over concrete?

I think that would work, but I don't know how long they would last. Does anyone wear shoes in there?

We put floating cork down once, and it was lovely. It feels soft under your feet, and it's warm and nice. We found some for pretty cheap online, but it would probably still be more than those tiles. A remnant of vinyl flooring would probably be really cheap, too.

I don't know about toxicity, but I saw they had the interlocking foam ones in the One Step Ahead catalogue. Kinda pricey, IMO, but it would be cool to has flooring like that. I bet you could call the manufacturer and ask about chemicals. My kids had some small foam sticky letters (like for craft projects) that seemed to emit some nasty fumes, but maybe it was b/c of the adhesive backing.

Yes you can put them directly over concrete....we did our basement with it. We bought ours at Home Depot....the pics on it even show it being used for garages (one side is coloured the other is black.

We're looking at putting in marmoleum tiles. It's a floating floor with cork backing, so nice on the feet and it's a pretty easy install.

We have the skip hop playmat. It was expensive, the design (how they conbect) isn't the greatest, and the mat is fairly small.

We have a rubber interlocking mat bought at Sam's Club, it is very soft. I clean it daily to keep it nice.
