I apologize for rambling... It's been a rough few days.
My 14 month old has always slept in an amby baby hammock. We'd tried a few times to break him of it, but he always slept swaddled and in the hammock. He had gastro issues when he was around 3-7 months or so, til we figured out that he's intolerant to gluten, dairy, and eggs.
He likes the hammock so much because he needs to bounce to sleep... he will occasionally fall asleep on the boob, but when I put him down I always have to bounce him a few times. Otherwise, I sit on an exercise ball and bounce him to sleep. Or bounce him in the hammock to sleep.
Last weekend we decided he HAD to get out of the hammock. We bought a mattress for the floor (my other 2 pretty much went from either my bed to a mattress on the floor, or the hammock to the mattress...joe might have had a brief stint in the crib) ... We packaged up the hammock so I couldn't go back. First night he was really tired (we went to the water park just to tucker him out) and he nursed to sleep. Woke when I laid him down, but I stuck a boob in his mouth and he went back to sleep. Slept for 3 hours - a LOT for him. Woke up and it took me 2 1/2 hours to get him back to sleep on the mattress, and I'm not sure what finally worked... slept for another 3 hours and then he was done. I tried repeatedly to get him back on the mattress -- laying with him, sidelying nursing, bouncing to sleep then laying down different ways... nothing worked.
Naps were nonexistent and we finally went out so he'd sleep in the carseat. Bedtime came again ... (after my husband put the hammock back together because he couldn't take how grouchy he was) ... he passed out again and I laid him down. Slept for 2 hours. Up for 3 trying to get him back down... he spent the rest of the night in the hammock (but unswaddled).
Sunday he napped in the hammock -- unswaddled for a quick 20 min, then i caved and swaddled him for a 1 1/2 hour nap (good for him). Bedtime came again... after 3 hours of trying various stuff, I got him sleeping on the mattress... slept for 2 hours, got him back down on the mattress asleep for another 2 hours (took 20 min of nursing and bouncing in my arms). Slept for another hour. Went in to sidelay and nurse... we did that for an hour or so... he popped off and laid down next to me to sleep. I did mental cartwheels... but 5 min later he was up and screaming again. Another 2 hours later he was back in the hammock...
I don't want to cio -- I talk a good game about trying it to see if it would work, but I know in my heart I can't do it. But I'm out of options. He won't sleep with me (I'd LOVE to cosleep and I promise not to b1tch at the time it takes, like i did with my last 2) ... but he won't. He'll play for a bit, cuddle a few... but then he's up and screaming til you bounce him. And, bouncing in my arms barely cuts it...he wants me on that darn ball... (not sure how he can tell the difference).
He's not getting enough sleep because he's starting to be really grouchy during the day... but I don't know how to MAKE him get the sleep he needs. Is it possible the only way to do it is to put him in the crib and just not let him out til he falls asleep on his own? Is it still cio if I'm right there next to the crib singing/talking/patting him (even though he WOULD be screaming at the top of his lungs I'm sure...)
HELP!
(and thanks!!!!!)
