Another name thread :) - boy name help pls?

DH & I had the *hardest* time choosing a name for DS, and we finally settled on his name after he was born by default because we didn't like any others any better. (We like it now!) We're expecting another boy & I'd love to avoid the same situation again.

We'd like a "manly" sounding name, especially with a harder consonant sound to it. Something traditional or Biblical would be preferred as opposed to something too trendy or made up. Our last name is 2 syllables & ends in -er, so we really don't like the sound of a 2-syllable first name ending in -or or -er (like Connor). We'd prefer a name that's longer than 1 syllable, but we'd be happy using a 1-syllable nickname.

I really like the name Gabe, but not Gabriel. Anyone know of any other names that could have the nickname Gabe? I also like Cole, but not Coleman or Colbert or anything else I can think of that incorporates Cole. Others I like are Caleb (too many in our family) and Jacob (TOO popular - #1 in the U.S. last year!).

So if anyone wants to help me brainstorm, I'd appreciate it!!

What is wrong with just plain Cole? I have a coworker by the name of Cole, it's not short for anything.

We have the same problem with boys names. Didn't have one picked for baby #3 while I was in labor but it was a girl so we were safe Now have to come up with a boys name for baby #4. With our 2 boys we just immediately fell in love with their names and they were perfect! Haven't had any luck since...
I say if you like Gabe then just use Gabe and the same with Cole!
Other options:
Jonah
Jonas
Elijah or Elisha (Eli)
Israel (my dh's pick)
Ephraim (mine)
Joseph
Zechariah
Hezakiah
Noah
Jonathan
Aaron
Abram (Abe)

We struggle with boy names too, but actually had one picked for this baby before learning she is a girl. I thought it sounded manly but didn't know anybody else with this name.

I knew a Nicholas (Nicolas?) who went by Cole. Makes sense, I suppose, since there's a COL sound in the middle of the name.

We have a Cain.

I know it's only one syllable but it's biblical and we feel it's masculine. Though I know some people have issue with the negative association from the story in Genesis.

I hadn't even thought it might be short for something.

You could use just Gabe or Cole. Nothing's stopping you, you know? If you like those names, go for it!

Thanks for the ideas, everyone! Some of those were already on our "maybe" list.

As for just using Gabe or Cole... we really like the idea of having a slightly longer name, for several reasons.

My name is actually the nickname/short form of a common longer name, and people always assume I'm just going by my nickname. I've been called by the longer version so many times that I respond to it just as if they used my real name! And I get tired of people asking "is that short for..." So especially with the name Gabe (which I've only heard as being short for Gabriel), I don't want my son to go through the same thing his whole life.
