How long did it take?

For those who have been there, done that how long did the divorce actually take and was it drawn out because of one party being difficult? My sbx seems to think we can be divorced in as little as 3 weeks and my attorney says it could be as long as 6 months if my sbx carries on the way he has been. Personally I would prefer 3 weeks but thats dreaming!

Interested to see the replies...

I think a lot of it will vary by state and personal situation. Stbx and I *could* be divorced in as little as 3 months (90-day waiting period after we first file), but if we can't agree on things and it drags out...well, who knows?

Mine was started 1/1/10 and we are still not finished.....

Here you have to be seperated for two years before you can even file for divorce. I'm not sure how long it takes for the divorce to be finalised after that.

If mine is settled at the court date, it will have been a little over 4 months.

My ex and I were never actually married, so THAT was pretty quick. My husband has BTDT twice. The first time, there was an infidelity issue (his ex, not him!), but aside from that he and his ex got along well. That took several months to finalize. The second time, his ex was pretty...God, how does one describe her? Out there. Absolutely everything was a source of conflict, especially every single second of contact the court said DH could have with their son. From filing to finalizing, that took seven years, plus an additional year and a half of continuing custodial issues and hearings, until he got custody. So, eight and a half years before there was a stable situation and they got through 12 months without returning to court.

Here there is a time difference (waiting period difference?) if there are children involved or not. I think there is a 90 day wait between filing and court without kids but 120 days or more if there are children involved. Of course, that is from everyone deciding they are satisfied with the terms.

Good luck!!!

Filed 1/31/2007. Still not divorced, custody still being battled. Is ex being difficult? Just a little.

It took us over a year - because my ex refused to budge on custody/visitation, and we went to trial. Plus we had an interstate divorce - I moved out of state when we separated, then he filed in the home state, so I had to fly back several times for court appearances, mediation, etc.

Mine only took two months. That was with things going as fast as possible.

Last time we got it all filed and done in one afternoon. It was even free for us to do. Then it took six months before it was officially final. But yeah, if you agree on everything it can get done pretty darn quick.

Here it takes 120 days after you file. I don't think it will take longer for us *knock on wood*

Two years!! OMG! That's awful! I'd go insane!

It's crazy how different the states differ on the regulations. We have a three month wait period from time of notice of sueing for divorce. Then from there... Depends on how long it takes to come to agreement on everything.
