Birth announcement

Well, I was just settling in for a long few weeks' bedrest last night when the nurse decided that the pink discharge I was having was mostly amniotic fluid.

That was a bit after 9 PM. DH had just left for what was supposed to have been 2 or 3 days at home, working and taking care of Nova. He had to get the first ferry back off, but they wouldn't wait that long to do the section.

Christopher W. was born at 2:41 AM via c-section, weighing 4 lb 7 oz, and 17" long or thereabouts, gestational age 34-ish weeks.

He's just over half the weight DD was at 42 weeks, but he looks pretty well for a kid in the NICU. He's breathing room air well, he's got good color, steady heart rate, etc. He even licked a bit of milk from my nipple when I got to hold him around noon. Just now, I expressed an ounce or so of colostrum. It's strange, him being out and not really being with him, but I think he'll do OK. I was terrified of the early birth, and the c-section went smoothly in most ways.

The big bummer about the c-section is that because of the way the vessels of the placenta wrapped around the uterus, they couldn't do a regular cut, but had to do the old-fashioned vertical incision instead. That means I'll never be able to have a vaginal delivery, which makes me sad, but we were probably done anyway.

So much for all my predictions of going into October!!!

Welcome Baby Christopher!

That's so awesome that he's breathing room air, and getting some colostrum. Have you seen the NICU lactation consultant? I saw one with ds and she was so super helpful with the whole preemie/pumping/positioning after c/s issues that came up.

Can't wait for pics!

Glad to hear that he is doing so well. I'm sorry that things didn't go as you'd hoped. But crossing fingers for quick recoveries and healing and being able to go home soon and be with the rest of your family and babymoon!

I'm so glad you're safe and that Christopher is doing so well...what a strong little baby! Sorry things didn't go as you planned they would, but on the bright side, you'll be home with Nova and your dh that much sooner. I hope Christopher goes home with you VERY soon!

Congratulations, mama! It sounds like you have a healthy, wonderful little boy! And if you haven't checked in yet, you might want to visit the Life With A Babe sub-forum that specializes in NICU and preemies. Lots of support there, and lots of help with nursing/feeding in a hospital.

I just realized that both of our DDC babies were boys, and they were the same weight and height (I went back to Jrene's post to check). I really like patterns hence why I noticed But I thought it was neat and I'm glad they are both here safe and sound

Congratulations and welcome little Christopher!

I'm sorry that your DH was unable to make it in time and that your little guy is apart from you, but it does sound as though he--and YOU--are doing wondefully.

What great news of another healthy, if early, arrival!!

Congratulations on your little boy!

As many others have mentioned, I'm sorry that circumstances weren't your ideal, but I'm so happy that it sounds like you and he are doing well, and I hope you're able to be with the rest of your family very soon!

It sounds like you went through a lot. Congrats on a healthy baby and good luck with breastfeeding, I hope your NICU is supportive and helpful. If he doesn't nurse well try to pump for 20 minutes every 3 hours around the clock if you can (I know exactly how exhausting that is- I had to EP for my daughter and she spent 5 days in the nicu) Good luck with everything
