Well, I was just settling in for a long few weeks' bedrest last night when the nurse decided that the pink discharge I was having was mostly amniotic fluid.
That was a bit after 9 PM. DH had just left for what was supposed to have been 2 or 3 days at home, working and taking care of Nova. He had to get the first ferry back off, but they wouldn't wait that long to do the section.
Christopher W. was born at 2:41 AM via c-section, weighing 4 lb 7 oz, and 17" long or thereabouts, gestational age 34-ish weeks.
He's just over half the weight DD was at 42 weeks, but he looks pretty well for a kid in the NICU. He's breathing room air well, he's got good color, steady heart rate, etc. He even licked a bit of milk from my nipple when I got to hold him around noon. Just now, I expressed an ounce or so of colostrum. It's strange, him being out and not really being with him, but I think he'll do OK. I was terrified of the early birth, and the c-section went smoothly in most ways.
The big bummer about the c-section is that because of the way the vessels of the placenta wrapped around the uterus, they couldn't do a regular cut, but had to do the old-fashioned vertical incision instead. That means I'll never be able to have a vaginal delivery, which makes me sad, but we were probably done anyway.
So much for all my predictions of going into October!!!
