Your child's first day at pre-school....

DD will be 3 when she starts pre-school next month. The school has requested that a parent stay for the first day. They'll be sending out more info, but I was wondering if anyone has BTDT.

Do the parents stay in the background and observe unless their child needs them or is it more involved? My daughter is very extroverted and loves playing with other children so I doubt she'll even notice I'm there, but I'm horribly shy so I can't say I'm looking forward to it!

Well ds's school is a co-op so parents are more heavily involved than a typical school. I played and helped ds navigate the new social setting, as it was his first time in any kind of care and he was only 20months when he started.

But many parents just stay a little while and do other tasks, like dishes, clean up etc or they just follow the rhythm and routine of the day, participate in the morning activity and then sit in on circle time and such. It probably differs by school.

IDK... Ds1 is 3.5 and starting preschool next tuesday and I don't plan on taking him in or anything, though I still haven't heard back about bus schedules yet either...

Last year on the first day I walked DS to PK3. The next day he demanded that I use the carpool lane. DS like your DD is extroverted and enjoyed the time spent with his teachers and classmates.

My daughter just had her first day today and i just dropped her off. I would be terribly uncomfortable staying all day- I'm very shy as well.
My kids are both extroverts and love people. They hardly notice when i leave and my son asked me to not walk him in to his first day of first grade this year.

At DS's preschool, parents stay outside the classroom in the hallway. DS was very shy when he first started (he isn't anymore though,) so I spent the whole first month of his first year in preschool sitting in the hallway knitting.
