At that age, DD liked a wide variety of stuff:
- Supplies for drawing and other arts/crafts (I preferred getting stuff she could do herself)
- Books
- Toys for imaginative play (tent/house, play food, kitchen and tea party stuff, dress up clothes)
- DD was (and still is) very into "homework" workbooks (at that time, for learning the alphabet, simple spelling, or numbers)
- Board games
DD was also into princess and fairy stuff (as well as superheroes), but that was generally more of one of many themes in the above list rather than separate toys.

if its a child you dont really know then try some oddball art supply. not the usual colouring book, crayons kinda stuff but more the KLUTZ brand of toys. or look at your local art store. they have great ideas at our art stores. or if you have the time putting together a bunch of items in a basket that she might enjoy. at that age they are fascinated with miniature things - so anything you get miniature would be a hit.
oh i also wanted to add. the invitation itself can be the clue. if it has princesses on it, you KNOW anything princess will go great. i always though include the gift receipt in case of multiplicity.
