Pen & Teller's Bull: Vaccinations show - Page 2

The Penn and Teller BS episodes I've watched I've fully agreed with. This one was one that I was specifically in agreement with.

I've done my research as I've done with every major parenting decision. Hours and hours of scouring unbiased sources online (so not the psycho lady's website lol) and medical textbooks. I don't vaccinate because my pediatrician tells me to. I don't vaccinate because the state tells me to (we're a state that allows non-vaccination for personal conviction). I vaccinate because I've done the work and decided that they were in the best interest of my children.

We don't do flu shots and I did not let my kids guinea pig the H1N1 shot despire repeated recommendations from my kids' pediatrician's office.

In any case, I've never believed the autism-vaccine link. It wasn't rocket science to realize that the rate of autism went up because doctors were better equipped and knowledgeable enough to diagnose it. Childhood schizophrenia? Puh-leeze. ha

I love Penn and Teller.

That's my view, also.

I also will not let my kid get the chicken pox vaccine.

Me, too. And I really get tired of the characterization that those of us who vax are just mindless sheep who haven't read the right websites I give non-vaxers the benefits of the doubt, I wish more could do the same for me.

At any rate, I haven't seen this episode, so I can't comment. But I will say that I think people that are "crunchy" hear about the circ episode and assume that P&T hold beliefs that they don't. They're very "mainstream" in many ways, but it's not because they're unintelligent or uninformed

(ok, actually, I remember a couple other kids who lost arms/legs in tractor accidents over the years, but none w/ *mental* issues!!). SOMETHING is weird. SOMETHING is going on. Just cause' we don't know wtf it is doesn't mean its not happening. I'm not 100% convinced its vaccines (though we dont' vax ), but it could be. It could also be all the frigging plastic, or chemicals or preservatives or pesticides or herbicides in our food/water. Or it could be all the new radio/tv/etc waves in the air around us that didn't use to be there. Or about a million other things. but *SOMETHING* is definetly going on.
Just wanted to point out that the integration of special needs kids was not widespread until the early 90's. I remember in 1986 in the third grade when our school got the first autistic kid, and it was a BIG deal. Parents' meetings were involved and lots of education for the kids about autism (this was before Rain Man came out so we didn't even have that idea of autism ingrained in us yet.) For years there was only one or two kids at our school, but it wasn't because they weren't around. They went to a specialized school in the district.

Plus there were many autistic kids' that were simply sent away never to be spoken of outside the family. So let's not base our opinions about how many autistic children there were on our personal experiences of not knowing any.

Heavy metals and autism

The whole thimerosol/vaccines and autism thing is so oversimplified. Not that I think that Penn and Teller were interested in presenting a balanced thoughtful piece, they do not bring up all of the research that DOES favor a link between env causes, specifically heavy metals.
