Wise pet owners, I need help/insight/advice on our current situation.
We have two cats, a 17 yo Siamese male and a 16 yo Siamese female. They have been together since the female was just a wee kitten. Until recently, they were the best of buddies, totally inseparable.
The female as diagnosed as diabetic about 2 years ago. It has been a long haul with the disease. She had a couple crashes that landed her in
emergency vet hospital until her levels were stabilized.
We have her levels checked frequently and adjustments have been made several times. She eats only Rx diabetic management food. We did try to introduce a raw meat diet but she absolutely wasn’t interested.
Repeated testing indicates she may be reversing out of the diabetes.
She has gone from 1 unit 2x per day to 0.5 unit 1x per day. She gets her levels checked again Friday.
Has anyone had a cat that has reversed out of diabetes? I don’t want to get my hopes up…..
At the same time, we are having “issues” with the male cat.
Up until 2 weeks ago, the male and female were BFF – always sleeping together, bathing each other, etc. for 16 years. The male has always been the dominate cat in the relationship.
We took the female to the vet for a check-up and when we returned, he totally freaked out when she approached him. Ok fine, we thought, she might smell funny from the vet, he will get over it.
He never did. DH tried to facilitate a “reunion” with disastrous results. DH petted the female and then tried to pet the male. The male totally lost it and then turned on us. I seriously thought he was going to lunge at my neck. When I tried to reach out toward him, he swiped at me.
This has never happened before; he has never been aggressive toward either of us.
We left him alone for 24 hours and he warmed up to us again but has not returned to the female. He still hisses and shrieks when she gets near him. It has been more than two weeks. Honestly, she doesn’t really seem to care about the rejection, which surprises me a bit.
My gut tells me something is going on with one of them, an undiscovered illness, that is causing him to reject her.
Both cats have had extensive check-ups including blood works and nothing indicates any problems.
My DH humanizes the cats and thinks there is some sort of rational and intentional behavior on the male’s part.
I am wondering if it isn’t the male’s way of pulling away from her because either he is about to die or she is. Maybe I am over-thinking it.
Aside from the cat-on-cat attitude problem, the male is just fine. I don’t see any signs of illness or injury, he is acting normal.
Anyone has insight to this problem?
DS and the male cat are much attached to each other and I can’t tell you how much I dread the thought of either cat’s passing but especially the male’s.
