Singapore Math - Earlybird and Primary 1 difference?

Hi all,

My dd, 5 years old, and I enjoy doing math together. We have been using Miquon math orange and red books, so far just addition and subtraction focused. DD does very well with all that... I was thinking about trying out Singapore math too, as I have read excellent reviews of it. DD is only a kindergartener, of course, but I was just wondering about earlybird vs. primary 1. what does earlybird math cover? is it sufficient for dd who has been doing miquon math? how rigorous is primary math 1? can anyone tell me what subjects are covered in each of these two, earlybird v. primary?

I'd rather not push dd too much, but she is an eager learner and I also want her to stay motivated. what would others suggest with regard to singapore math levels? thanks!!!

I would go for Primary 1. Miquon Orange and Red are well beyond most stuff in the Early Bird series.

the only problem is that the placement tests don't cover the earlybird books. They simply start with Primary 1A. But after looking into it a bit more, I think we may just start with 1A.

True but if your kiddo can place into 1a then start with that. If your kiddo couldn't place into 1a then I would go with EB!

You will want to do the placement test if you do the primary series.

In the primary series, there is a textbook (not meant to be written in) and a workbook. There are supplements too, but when you are already doing Miquon, you really do not want the supplements. If you do Early Bird, there is just a workbook. Do 2A and 2B, skip over 1A and 1B as it sounds like she is too far along for it. In Early bird, each page has an activity you can do, like stand on a number line and hop forward and backward while counting. You might find early bird to be too easy for someone who already has done the first 2 Miquon books. But, it is still fun so she might like it anyway. The stuff covered in 2A and 2B seem to be what is covered in Primary series 1A. I am having my son finish the Early Bird books then he will go on to Primary 1B. I will do a placement exam in between to make sure he really is ready to go on to 1B.

Earlybird is set up with only two books now. EB A and EB B - each with a textbook and activity book.

You'd have to find used books to get the older version of EB. (it says it's discontinued on the Rainbow Resource website)

I had someone who is familiar with both tell me that Earlybird is the same material covered in primary 1, but at a slower pace.

Yes, except EB doesn't go into any of the mental aspects that Singapore Primary is known for. We also used both EB books and currently Primary 1.
