Attemping free motion embriodery

I would like to try my hand at free motion embroidery on my sewing machine. I have researched some basics. Any tips or tricks for a beginner like me?

Do I really need to spend money on stabilizer? I have read that some people use coffee filters and such but is it really safe for the machine?

I did this a few years ago w/my first machine. I just followed the directions in the manual. It was fun but took a lot of patience. For me it was all trial and error. I did not use stabilizer, but did use a medium weight fabric secured in an embroidery hoop as this is what was explained in my manual. I think I did some monograming on some washcloths, too, but soon lost interest and gave it up.

Advice - practice, practice, practice. Drop by a local quilt shop if you have one to see what others are doing.
