I need some help here. Please.
Last week my 3.5 year old presented with a rash, high fever (103-104), joint pain (head, neck, shoulders, wrists, legs), belly ache, slight sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes.
Recently we visited a state that is very common for deer ticks. We were aware of this and made sure to take precautionary measures such as wearing light-colored clothing, etc.. We checked for ticks daily and even found a nymph deer tick on my baby when I was nursing her!
Anyway, when we returned from our trip our 3.5 year developed these sudden symptoms about 1.5 weeks later. My doctor is treating her for Lyme. This experience has been very hard on her and us.
Anyway, I wanted to run the course of treatment by you guys to learn if it's sufficient.
He prescribed penicillin every 4 hours for the first 24 hours and then every 6 hours for 20 more days. Is this enough? Is this the first choice antibiotic? Also, he wants us to see a Lyme Specialist.... well, first available appointments are anywhere from 3 weeks from now (which we scheduled) to 3 MONTHS from now!
The doctor we are scheduled to see wasn't rated well at all on ratemds.com. He was by far one of the worst reviewed. I'm thinking of having my family practice doctor call one of these other specialists (with good reviews) and ask for some guidance. I think he would be willing to do that.
Please provide me some dosage/duration/type of antibiotic experience here for a child. I would love to know your thoughts and experiences about this matter.
