Talk to me about training pants

My son is toilet training. I'm usually a no-underwear trainer .as in.let
the kid run around naked until they get the idea. However, I'm busy, and
tired and don't really want to be shampooing carpets 3 times a day anymore
like I did with my other 2 kids. So I thought I'd try making some training
pants like so many people do.

Don't know if this is allowed but here is a link to the picture of the ones
I just made on my Facebook page (this particular album should be available
for anyone to view): http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31492811

Now.adorable as they are.I'm not sure what to do NOW. First of all.they are
2 layers of T-Shirt Material with a large size internal hidden soaker with 2
layers of microfiber towel and a layer of PUL. I was hoping that this would
stop his pants from getting wet if he had an accident while we were out (of
course realizing that because it's not a diaper, it's still very likely to
leak through if he wets heavy).

If he pees a little.I'm pretty sure it will hold, but when he wore these, we
went out and he just let it all go.peed a good pee and his pants were not
soaked.but pretty wet considering it was only ONE pee.

Am I completely missing the point of training pants? Should I be making
them more absorbent? I don't want them to be as thick as diapers so need to
find a happy medium where he still feels comfortable. Or should I just give
up on the idea and go back to little naked bum and 3 changes of clothes
every time I leave the house?? Lol

I had some bumkins pull ups and they did not leak unless dd slept overnight in them. I think they are supposed to be almost as absorbent as a dipe but not as bulky and to get them used to pulling undies up and down. However, my ds pees way more than dd and I don't think a cloth trainer would hold it.

P.s. My bumkins trainers are ffs on the trading post if you are interested vthey are girly though.

what is the waterproof material? is it vinyl?

i'm wondering if i made them out of microfleece with a hidden pul layer if that would work.

OH...and i was just thinking...maybe the WHOLE thing needs to be lined in PUL and not just the soaker part. hmm...still very puzzling to me and I can't seem to find any info online.

I couldn't see the picture.

I am guessing you need to make the whole outer layer (anything that will touch his pants) waterproof or water resistant. So if you want to keep PUL just in the middle, then have the whole outside be fleece. Which should be nice actually with the t-shirt, both are stretchy, so you could get a snug fit without using elastic maybe.

Our son waits for a training pants or pull up to poop, so we are finding the kind that can open and close a must, otherwise the poop gets all over his legs as we take them off.

ETA: We like our Ansty Pants ones someone is letting us use. They are PUL outer, but the sides are a stretchy material and then have snaps too, you could google that to get an idea.

I did make a pair the same as the first ones I made only I put fleece on the outside in the wetzone and it worked perfect Now if only i could find my fold over elastic...i used jersey to rib the waist and legs but i think i'll try microfleece instead on the next ones.
