Go Fish!

Thread Starter
DD loves it. OK. But 6 months later and 5 million hands of Go Fish, I am really, really tired of it. Ideas? What card games do you play, and can you explain the rules? i'm looking for something between Go Fish (easy) and Poker (way to hard for my DD).

Old maid, crazy 8's, war?
We have a ton of games that my kids love - from memory to most of the cranium games. Really like cranium doggie bingo these days!

Uno is a favorite around here! When my son was first learning we kept all the cards face up, but now we can keep them obscured so it's really fun.

I really like the card games by Looney Labs like Fluxx. You can find them in comic/game shops.

We always played Skipbo with our grandma.

I'm gonna say Uno too....it's a great game because there are so many new variations of it.

We have a computer Uno game that incorporates a spy theme where you have have to win hands of Uno in order to get clues and then solve the overall puzzle.
There's also Uno Attack...this can get pretty hairy! So much fun!!

It's a pretty basic game to pick up and is wonderful for learning colors/numbers. They even have different deck themes.

I love it.

How old is your DD? They have Phase 10 for kids which is a little more advanced, but maybe she could pick that up too.

Try Sleeping Queens and Rat-a-tat-cat. These are fun!

Age?

My 4 year old DS plays: Uno (can be played with an ordinary deck -- assign 9's to skip, 10's to change direction, Jacks to change color, Queens as draw 2, Kings as draw 4, etc), go fish, Milles Borne (requires a special deck), Skipbo, Quitch, Rummicube (started simplified without rearranging). A few more I'm not coming up with now...

We also play checkers so much I've started having dreams where I'm trapped on a checker board and can't escape, slowly getting surrounded by sky-scraper sized kings. In our house, parents start with a deficit of pieces, parent starting number goes up when he wins 5 games in a row.

We're now teaching chess.

We play it with my mom! This has been a favorite of dd's since she was about 5 or 6. It's easy enough to teach to young kids, but is interesting enough to keep the parents from getting too bored. Dd and I took a road trip vacation this summer and we spent every evening in our hotel room playing Skipbo.

Not sure how old your dd is, OP, but we also enjoy Phase 10 (really need at least 3 players for this), Quiddler, and In a Pickle.

Uno and War! Maybe Phase 10?

Uno and War-- and if you don't like War, Eboo has the same game called "Flower Power"

Not necessarily card games, but there's a great resource for kids games (board games and cards games) at a site I check out a lot.

Here's a link to their top rated kids games, some have as many as 2000+ people voting on the rating (1-10 rating), but most have about 100-200 ratings.

Here's one of my favorite kids games, mentioned already, Rat-A-Tat Cat. Won't put you in a coma, and you can change the difficulty for different kid abilities.

I've also played the game I designed with a group of homeschooled kids, some playing as young as five years old, and up to adults. It's called Zombie in my Pocket, it's $13 (or less online). It can be played cooperatively or competitively, but the kids I've played with have always played pretty cooperatively with it. It's on that same website, not for sale there, that's just an information kind of site.

Growing up we played Crazy 8s, 7 card rummy, war, and Uno.

If you have two decks you can do memory.

Thanks for the link, OpenAppleDad! We're board games nuts around here, so that site will come in handy!

Kids love war, but I must say that, as an adult, it is possibly the most boring card game in existence and it lasts FOREVER.

I recommend Crazy 8s, Steal the Pack, Snap, and Rummy. 99 is also fun, although kids have to be old enough to add cards to a running total.

Uno!

Slap jack is OK.

I'd never do war because it is a never ending game.

We play a one-trip-through-the-deck version. Get to the bottom of your pile, count the won cards, and done. It's a 5 minutes game that's not too painful if NPR is on in the background.

I loved Spit and Egyptian Ratscrew (like war but way more fun) when I was a kid.
oh, and crazy 8's, concentration (memory), and kings in the corners, too.
Old Maid is good because it's a lot like go fish but with an added twist. However, it's not the best two person game.
