need crochet pattern hslp please

Ok, so I decided to crochet this fireman hat
http://www.innerchildcrochet.com/pat...ireman_hat.php
for my 17 yo dd because she is in the fire explorer program.
But the pattern is for a child.
I started out following it to see what size it would be.
I am horrible horrible and rotten with gague.
I am at the point where it is obvious I will have to rip out a few rows and make it longer. I just did row 31 and it is a bit tight - I could probably make it a tiny bit wider - but it is stretchy so it may be ok, but it is about 2 inches too short. So, if I rip it out to rnd 27 and increase for a few rows there and then go straight down for a couple of inches and then do round 28 - it will have more stitches, can I just keep track of the added stitches and make it bigger that way? I will obviously have to make the brim bigger too, but can the patch and star still be the same size?
Do you think that will work? I am not good at things that need to be a certain size. Like scarves and washcloths are about the limit of my talent at this point.
thanks.

If you rip back to row 27 and do a few more rows, it would give you length but not more stitches, unless you add increases.

If it were me, I'd rip back to rnd 14, and add a couple more rnds, i.e.

Rnd 15 [sc inc, sc in next 13 sts] around. (90 sc)
Rnd 16 [sc inc, sc in next 14 sts] around. (96 sc)

Those two rounds would give you 12 stitches more wiggle room. Then do up to rnd 28 (maybe add a few rows 15-27 for lenghth) as written for increases and skip round 29. I think would would at (108 sc) when you are done with rnd 30.

Hope I didn't confuse you.

OP this pattern is ABORABLE and my 10yr old ds would love it.... we live in AZ so I need lightweight yarn...

Did you get this done... did the increase in rounds help? DS has a HUGE head, literally and figuratively :shurg so I try to follow adult sizing for him

Im not too good at patterns either but this one is simple enough for me that I should be ok.. no crazy stiches or anything LOL...

Oh man my project list is growing...
