BFing and Baby Poop

Hi all,

A quick question which I've already discussed w/ my pediatrician, but wanted more perspective from the smart mamas on MDC...

My DS (5 mos), exclusively breastfed, has, over the past 3 weeks, started pooping only once every 2-3 days. For basically DD's first year of life, she pooped a good 6 times a day, so this is totally foreign to me. He does still wet probably 4-6 times a day. He's nursing the same amount as always (about 6-7 times in a 24 hour period). The weird thing is, he passes gas quite a bit, which he never used to do, and (to be frank) it stinks - like a grown-up's gas would. And when he does finally poop, it stinks too. I'm used to the sweet-smelling breastmilk poop so I find it weird that it suddenly changed in scent. It's also darker in color than it was previously.

I did have stomach flu about 2 weeks ago, and took some immodium. I was afraid that it passed through to him and that was why the change was happening, but I haven't taken any in 2 weeks and he's continuing to not poop for days at a time.

He doesn't seem particularly uncomfortable (though the gas is strong and noisy when he passes it!) but I'm just curious why he wouldn't be pooping? Is he maybe not getting enough food? I really, really think he's getting plenty and if he wasn't he would nurse more frequently... . (In the meantime, I have MIL constantly in my ear about starting him on solid foods b/c "he's a big boy, he needs it" grrrr.)

Any thoughts or comments on digestion of breast milk much appreciated!

IME, ebf babies do not poo very frequently after their first few months. BM is almost completely absorbed by baby and there is very little left to expel so you'll get less poo. Once you start your lo on solids that'll pick back up but I wouldn't worry about the poo unless you start to see discomfort or other negative changes in baby.
I'm certain you're doing a great job nursing your "big boy" and be sure to enjoy your time with your nursling. It goes by so fast.
