if you could only use 1 kind of CD, what would it be?

Hi, I am a new mom of a 4 month old DD and am looking into CD. I have wanted to since before she was born and am finally in a position to make the investment.
I see from a lot of posts that many of you have many different styles of diapers (prefolds, pockets, AIOs). Is it unrealistic to think I can just buy 1 kind of cloth diaper ( I am leaning towards FuzziBunz One size). Or should I count on having to get a lot of different kinds?

If you could only use 1 type and brand of CD, ideally for more than 1 child, what would it be?

Edited to add: Ok now that I've done more reasearch, I'm leaning towards fitteds with covers because then I can use any type of doubler that I need and can get a variety of covers to suit different occasions, and let's face it get some just because they are so darn adorable:-) I am looking at either AMP hemp fitteds or kissaluvs fitted. I'm also not so concerned anymore with 1 size from now until pt. Also, can all pocket diapers ( fuzzibuns in particular) also be used as a diaper cover?) anyone have any experience with either of those?

Also, what is more absorbant and has more anti bactieral/microbial properties, bamboo or hemp?

BG sized AIOs. We having been using the mediums since she was about 3.5-5 months old and they still fit her great with lots of room to grow at 9 mos.

BG sized AIOs here, too. I need to get some mediums, actually.

Snappi'd prefolds with covers.

Flats and wool covers. They are easier to learn on newborns though than 4 month olds... BUT you can get 4 dozen medium sized ones on gmd for 60 bucks.

If I had to use some type of pocket, I would use something snapped and that has a fleece inner instead of the velour like BGs. I really like blueberries but they are expensive. I also really like RaR but they are having delamination issues with their PUL and keep changing the form to get a refund/new diaper making it hard to get messed up diapers fixed. A friend of mine was basically told to shove it when she emailed someone in the company for help. Awesome diapers and they are fixing the problem.. but their CS isn't the greatest right now, at least for my friend.

If I had to use pockets, I'd also rather not use microfiber. I much prefer hemp and bamboo myself. This would probably mean buying inserts separately. I don't like how MF feels, nore do I like how it washes. The thinner BG inserts are nice for dusting though....

If not flats, I also really like fitteds,. Preferrably OS snappiable fitteds such as bagshot row bamboo. I like the full customization for fit. Again, with a wool cover. I'd still choose flats however if I could only use ONE kind of diaper.

I love my BG one-size pockets. Granted, I mostly use prefolds/flats and covers because of cost. But if you only want to get one kind of diaper, I'd say BG one-size. This is because they'll fit for a considerable weight range and if your little one is ever with a sitter or someone who isn't familiar with cloth diapering, these are easy to figure out. You can also easily stuff them a little extra for more absorbency.

This would be my choice.

Ugh, my machine just ate my long reply.

If i could only choose one, it would be a pocket fitted like Happy Hempys.

The simple truth is that there is no one size fits all (situations) dipe. I've spent hndreds on dipes that dont work for my bean pole. Gapping legs, too large waists, not enough absorbancy, etc. There is no way i would expect one dipe to suit all situations, since needs change, even throughout the day. Today alone, my guy's worn his heavy overnight dipe, 2 coverless one-pee dipes (one of which he peed through), a trifold pf for his nap, and the rest of the day hes been naked as we try to clear up a rash.

I would not shell out for an entire single-dipe stash unless you know that dipe will work for you.

If I could have only one kind of cloth diaper, I'd go with flats, pins (and maybe a few snappis too) and pull-on covers.

They can be folded up really tiny for a newborn, or doubled or tripled and pinned onto a toddler. When DS outgrew all the fiteds and prefolds I had for him, the flats got me through until I could sew him some more fitted diapers. They can be folded differently and made to fit a skinny "string bean" baby or a chubby baby.

That said, a stash of only flats isn't the most convenient to use. It's as easy to make the diaper "not fit" any size of baby as it is to get a good, leakproof fit if you're not skilled at diaper folding. And you really don't need to have your entire stash be the exact same kind of diaper. Fitteds are very easy to use, and you may want to have a variety of brands to see what fits your baby best. Contoured diapers fit very conveniently into wrap-style diaper covers. And a lot of people seem to like prefolds, even though I never saw the appeal. Unlike flats, you need to worry about it being the right fit (and the bulk is often in the wrong spot) but, you don't have the "it fits around the baby without folding" ease of fitteds or contours.

I'd have to say prefolds. Mine never got stinky, didn't have to worry about elastic going on them, easy to wash/care for, are really absorbent and they have a zillion other purposes aside from diapers. Now ideally, I would have pocket diapers and fitteds on hand as well...for convenience and just because I love diapers so much.

Snappie'd unbleached Indian Prefolds and wool covers... all the way!!!

I'd probably go with our (homemade) flannel pockets, endless cute options.

But, I really do love our one size Bum Genius Pockets.

I would do bum genius one size pocket stuffed with prefolds or flats. Then I could use them as a pocket or use the pocket diaper as a cover.

Flats with wool wraps.

We used flats with a variety of homemade, wrap-style covers for my son for the entire 2 years he was in diapers. We CDed full time at home, on outings, and almost always on trips until he was about 18 months when we started sposies at night because he was gaining bladder control but when it rained, it FLOODED. He often wore the same sposie for 3 or 4 nights before he peed it.
We experimented very briefly with fitteds, pre-folds, and pockets during our career and none of them were worth it. Flats wash easily, dry in a flash (great for someone who is not able to dry outside because of apartment restrictions), and we never ever had build-up or stink issues with them. I'm actually sort of icked-out by all the layers and creases and folds in other diapers and always astounded at the washing routines I read and hear about for them. We just washed on hot with an extra rinse, and pre-rinsed poops (by hand) after my son started solids. They are ready and waiting for baby #2 coming in a few months. I did replace some elastic in some of our largest covers which my son wore from about 8 months to 2 years, but that is all I have had to do.

Prefolds. They are endlessly useful, pretty adjustable size-wise, and super easy to clean. I preferred to use mine with wool, but PUL covers also work really well. I like the classic cotton kind, but my favorites were organic colorgrown cotton prefolds, and then OBV prefolds (preflats) from Peanut Butter and Ellie (which she no longer makes. ) But I could make due with regular cotton prefolds just fine.

Another awesome feature of prefolds is how well they keep. I can save my prefolds for as long as I like. Their quality and resale value doesn't drop. Heck-- I could probably save them for my grandkids if I wanted to. And once they've served their diapering purpose, then they can move on to household jobs like dish-towels, hand-towels, and car washing rags.

I do NOT like my fuzzibuns right now. I keep forgetting to strip them though. They are repelling like crazy because they got Desitin on them. They are the OS pockets.

And I don't like stuffing pockets. I much prefer my fitted kissaluvs with PUL or wool (would like to do more wool but I *have* PUL, some of which was gifted to me)

DS (asleep, 21 months old) is currently wearing a kissaluv size 2 fitted with a hemp insert that I use at night and a prowrap large PUL cover.

I know like 5 mamas with close in age sibs who are in FB OS. All these kiddoes are 18-21 months apart. And they all rave about their dipes. Simple, streamlined system that is easy to use, no separate stash for each kid.

That being sad, I like a little variety. I love pockets for going out, but for overnight and around the house I prefer prefolds and covers. For the new baby I am going to try making some tshirt prefolds, which I've heard are really nice. They are also really inexpensive to make, which is good for me!

If you don't know what you want, try a diapering trial kit like this one: http://www.jilliansdrawers.com/produ.../tryclothfor10. A friend of mine did the one on diaperdaisy and it enabled her to figure out what worked for her and what didn't.

Prefolds and snappis, for sure!

With DD1 I tried all kinds of diapers. The pocket diapers and AIO's and one size all seem like great ideas, but they don't work that well. It's a pain to stuff pocket diapers. One size diapers don't fit tightly at all stages. Microfiber inside of most of those diapers gets terrible build up. Elastic goes bad. It's all so much trouble.

Prefolds are simple. You can buy premium prefolds and they'll fit for a long time. They fit DD1 through potty training. They wash and dry quickly and easily. Folding them is simple after a few days practice. They last through multiple children. You can tie dye them! Oh and they are CHEAP.

Prefolds, snappis and Thirsties covers or wool.

Prefolds with Swaddlebees ABC snap wraps. In fact, that IS all I use, except for daycare.
