Anti Obesity Vaccine

Really?

I can just see this on the pediatric schedule one day. Don't worry, your child will never be obese, just get them vaccinated, never mind about what you feed them.

We sure do love a quick fix, don't we.

Amazing, since there is a real fix. We just don't want it. More accurately, the corporations don't want it.

Not true, really, since there are multiple causes of obesity, there will never just 1 way to deal with it. The research pretty clearly shows that diet & exercise aren't a long term way to fix it though, since they fail in less than 5 years 95% of the time.

Same problem with the vax. It's a single solution for something with multiple causes, so even if it helps a few people, it will never help everyone.

True, the fix isn't a single thing. I was just thinking our entire lifestyles have led us astray, but the corporations have sold us on those lifestyles.

I do fully acknowledge that not 100% of obesity is caused by lifestyle; we've had obesity throughout history. But I think we can all agree something has changed, when suddenly - what is it, 60%? - of Americans are overweight/obese. That's not natural.

And I'm not shaking the finger at any individuals; as my siggie attests I struggle with weight myself and am one of the 60%+. The corporations want us to buy, buy, buy, and they are happy to sell us something else when their products give us problems. This being a prime example.

They tell us there's a quick fix and we buy it. When that one doesn't work (or causes new problems) we'll buy the next one.

There is just nothing I can say on this thread that won't get me flagged. An anti-obesity vaccine has me seeing red!

I find it interesting that one of the main reasons that they're stating is the "commercial importance" of this vaccine. Why not just come out and say they're looking for another cash cow from people who are looking for a silver bullet for our weight issues?

Maybe...just maybe?...this is a treatment vaccine and not a preventative vaccine? Because then I'd have less of an issue with it. Obesity is very complex, there are so many factors, diet and exercise just won't work for everyone. Many need help in other ways. This could perhaps be some sort of combo of vitamins and hormones or SSRIs perhaps to help a body.

There are many "treatment" vaccines on the market that I have no issue with at all! Insulin, B12 injections, fertility injections, human growth hormone injections, antibiotic injections, etc. It's primarily the so-called preventative vaccines that I believe are concerning, mostly because it's a "one size fits all" mindset.

So maybe this isn't that. Maybe this will be just another treatment option available to drs who are medically treating obesity.

This can't be right. You can't vaccinate for obesity. It's not a virus to which your body will produce immunity if it's exposed to the appropriate antigens. If this is a real article, and not someone's idea of a joke, calling it a vaccine is just dumbing it down for the masses, a common practice I particularly dislike.

I found this: http://www.scripps.edu/news/press/073106.html It has more on the actual study.

The thing that gets me is that the rats they used ATE NORMALLY and didn't change anything regarding their activity level. So, it's not like they were gorging on McDonalds and playing video games all day.

So it's an injection that mucks around with your hormone levels. Probably not the greatest idea, but there's lots of money to be made! People love the quick fix that doesn't require any change.

Even if it is intended to be a part of treatment it's different from the other injectable things you listed which aren't vaccines. Things like insulin & B-12 are just replacing deficient things your body needs & the other things like fertility hormones & antibiotics aren't going to be permanently/long-term circulating like a vaccine induced antibody could be.

I think this is really problematic because it could have some unintended consequences:

Ghrelin, a gastric endocrine hormone produced primarily in the stomach, plays a physiological role in energy homeostasis, although the full extent of that role remains unknown.
And I'm not sure of this:
Quote:
the immunized rats were fed low-energy, low-fat, and relatively less palatable chow diets and were comparatively lean. “Whether active immunization against ghrelin would help prevent the development of obesity caused by… high-fat ‘Western’ diets or would facilitate weight loss once obesity is established” remains uncertain

This is utterly disgusting What is wrong with this country? It's really getting out of hand and quite scary. Who would even think about getting something like this???
