Suggestions for cleaning a glass/ceramic top stove...

Thread Starter
We recently moved into a house with a smooth top stove, from a house with glass... I am trying to figure out the best way to keep it looking good (like when we moved in) and how to clean up burnt on messes (such as stew bubbling over) with non toxic stuff (hopefully that I have in my home)...

Any ideas?

Hi, I have a glass top. Every day I clean it down after I use it and that seems to prevent the dirt buildup that happens with glass. I make my own general cleaner that is a glass cleaner to. It works great to spray and leave for a few mins to loosen the dirt on stovetop.

It's 2 cups water, 1 tsp Sals Suds (detergent) or you could use Dr. Bronner's soap, and 1/2 cup white vinegar.

If you use this on mirrors it will streak the first couple times, as it gets rid of former cleaner. Again, I use this on EVERYTHING!

For tough cooked on food, sprinkle some baking soda then spray this solution and rub with a cloth. (Test first in an inconspicuous place to make sure it won't scratch.)

Have fun with your new house!

When mine gets really grungy or has some kind of baked on mess I usually mix up a baking soda paste (just baking soda and water) and spread it all around and then let it dry overnight. Then I use a wet scrubber brush to scrub it off. For intense baked on gunk I use a really sharp razor blade scrape it off. Have to be careful with that though because it can scratch if it gets something under it.

HTH!

I recently bought these http://www.vileda.ca/en/scourers/ceran/ and they work wonderful! Maybe not the best option but it works for us!

I use a razor blade on my tough spots, and then Bon Ami or baking soda as a scrubbing paste with a non-scratching sponge or brush.

i bought a home in march with this and hated it. i did use a comercial cleaner and it did wonders on making cleaning easier.
BUT
it's pots you have to watch out for. i thought i had all the right types (no cast iron, rough services, etc) somehow, while my 2 SIL were cooking, they scratch the surface.

so glad DH got transfered and we moved to an area where almost all homes use gas for cooking

I was just in a rental home and by the end of the week, the glass top stove had marks on it, and after trying the specific cleansers they had in the cabinet, and a scrubby sponge with dish soap, to no avail, I used a yellow/green scrubby sponge (the more scratchy kind), voila, the marks came right off with just a little dish soap and water.

Razor Blade

For nasty stuff we use a razor blade or I scrub it with and SOS pad (like steel wool with soap in it).

I ran out of the stovetop cleaner and used baking soda toothpaste I had on hand. It worked great! Now I don't buy the cleaner anymore.

I have had my ceramic stove top for about six years now and I use Bar Keepers Friend and then I buff it with the regular

ceramic cleaner to get it to shine.  It works every time and still looks like new!!!!  Hope this helps!!!  Good Luck!!!

I second Bar Keepers Friend.  It's what we use and it works great! You need to put a little elbow grease into the scrubbing, but it's about the best I've found for glass tops.
