Mono and a four year old

So a few weeks ago my daughter went to urgent care with a temp of around 105. Yikes. She tested positive for mono. Her ped saw her the next week for a follow up and let us know that while it might have been mono, false positives are pretty common in kids that young so take precautions but be aware it could've been just one of those things. They can do blood work to know for sure but she's had enough of that, he knows how she's terrified of it and didn't advise it and I certainly wasn't signing on for bloodwork for no good reason.

Anyway, has your child had mono and what were the following months like? Everyone told me oh, she'll be so tired. My kid took a nap every day for like five months. When that didn't really happen, I sort of blew it off and thought yeah, she probably didn't have mono. But she HAS been tired and she has been very emotional - and she's emotional when she's tired. Her appetite is ok but it has certainly slowed down a bit. She is OUT every night by 7.30 and sleeps till whenever the sun comes up (next purchase: black out curtains). She would go to sleep earlier but I'm afraid she'll wake even earlier. Everytime we get in the car for more than 15 minutes, she goes to sleep.

Does this sound like the after effects of mono or like a four year old who could use a nap?

About a week after she had mono, one of her meds was increased and a side effect can be fatigue and irritability but it was a TEENY increase and literally fifteen minutes ago I thought oh yeah, maybe it WAS mono. She fell asleep tonight around 7.45, in a chair, watching tv. She never falls asleep on her own except in the car (and that's a fairly recent thing). Maybe five times in her whole life including when she was an infant, she's gone to sleep on her own.

I didn't think kids that young could get mono.... hmmm... My DD2 (5yo) got a fever (104.5 the first day). The fever lasted 10 days. DD1 (13yo) got it 5 days later (103.5 the first day) and hers lasted 12 days. They both got a cough around day 4 or 5. I went to the ped with DD2 about the 5th day. They tested for strep and looked in her ears and listened to her lungs, and said "just a virus". Both of them were taking 3-4 naps per day. Just sleeping a ton. DD1 still (a month later) has a lingering cough and gets wiped out easily. Now I am starting to wonder if I should get them checked...

Because her fever was SO high, they tested for three or four other things first and finally said well...mono isn't likely but it does happen so we'll test for that. And it was positive. Her ped says it does happen, not often, but not unheard of.

The big precaution with mono is that the spleen can become enlarged and burst so you should keep them from playing rough - but it's a LONG recovery. Six to even 18 months.

Both of my kids had mono when they were 1 and 3. We had them tested primarily because their glands were so swollen. I would say they were a little more tired than usual with the illness and maybe a week to two afterwards. But nothing like when a teenager gets mono.
