I'm with PP who said they would be tempted to do something over the top. Sometimes people like that don't realize how silly they sound until someone does something equally ridiculous.

Her: MY daughter is studying xyz in science. She is SO smart!
You: MY daughter moved past that two years ago. Right now she's working on cloning our dog.

Unfortunately my dd who is the same age as her dd is well beyond her in terms of placement in some of the areas they are being compared. I don't want to be mean or hurtful. I think that the degree to which my eldest has excelled is prompting some of the insecurity.

I could, technically, downplay my younger dc is an effort to make it sound like we all have strengths and weaknesses as do our kids (a la the "Johnny couldn't hit the side of a barn" comment suggested earlier). However my youngest has had some self esteem issues related to living in her sister's shadow and I don't want to throw her under the train for the sake of peace.
