Floradix & angelica

I noticed on my floradix (iron + herbs pills) that it contains angelica root. I know angelica is given after birth to help seperate the placenta. I *just* bought this and started it like 2 days ago and with the considerable expense for my 3 month supply, I was wondering if it was still ok to take?

Floradix was specifically recommended to me by my midwife, and I know there are a great many mamas on MDC who take it. I'll have to double-check my copy of Herbs in the Childbearing Year, but I'm guessing that either the amount of angelica is very, very low, or that those particular properties are being countered by one of the other herbs.

How old is your bottle? It's my understanding they no longer make it with the Angelica for that very reason, and none of the new bottles Ive bought contain it. If you ended up with old stock, it might still have it. Just a thought.

Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) root has been used for more than a thousand years as a spice, tonic, and medicine in China, Korea, and Japan. It is still used often in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is usually combined with other herbs.

There is no recommended dose for dong quai, because information on its safety in humans is lacking.

You should not drink the essential oil of dong quai because it contains a small amount of cancer-causing substances.

Dong quai should not be used by those who have chronic diarrhea or abdominal bloating.

People who are at risk of hormone-related cancers, including breast, ovarian, and uterine cancers, should not take dong quai because researchers aren't sure if it has estrogen-like effects.

Some lab tests suggest that dong quai contains compounds that may help reduce pain, dilate blood vessels, and stimulate and relax uterine muscles. More studies are needed to see whether dong quai is safe or effective.

Dong quai should not be used during pregnancy because it may cause the uterus to contract and raise the risk of miscarriage. Nursing mothers should avoid dong quai because information on its safety is lacking.

Women who are pregnant and wish to remain so should avoid using Dong Quai or other Angelica species.

Angelica has a powerful action over a woman's reproductive system. American and European Angelica were used by colonial women to promote menstruation and to terminate pregnancy.

Above is a link to a pretty informative site about Angelica and its recommended uses as well as a short list that states why one should avoid imbibing it.
For these reasons I would not take anything containing angelica during pregnancy.

Can you return it and get the liquid? Or exchange it at a local health food store? The liquid (not the yeast-free) really isn't that bad in taste. Expensive, yes, but should be more effective than the pills, too.

I ordered it online and have already been taking it, so I'm sure I can't return it.
