Good coverage of the Dutch stance

Sorry if this has appeared before, but a women's blog has a pretty cool summary of the Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG) statement on male infant circumcision. It is rumored to be the first national or international medical association to outright discourage the practice.

"Calling circumcision 'a violation of the right to autonomy and the right to the physical integrity of the child,' KNMG and its 46,000 members say the surgery is a medically useless procedure that unnecessarily endangers children."

The article states that with their announcement, the KNMG hopes it can influence attitudes on circumcision worldwide. It has drawn inspiration from the rise of grassroots groups actively opposed to male infant circumcision.

Right now, the Dutch medical association is the only organization specifically condemning circumcision. “Most medical associations say it is up to parents to decide. We say the whole practice should disappear. We hope more medical practitioners will follow our lead.”

Slightly OT, but the blog seems to have an interesting sibling site, which also would probably have been a good place for their reporting on this to appear.

The Royal Dutch Medical Association is brave. Kudos to them for offering a well-thought, articulate counter-opinion to all the pro-circ drooling from U.S. researchers.
