Help me with this rash...

So little guy has a nasty rash. Or rather, it looks nasty, some of the time, but it doesn't seem to bother him any. During the day it goes from minor to "OHMYGOD" and then the next day it starts back at minor. I've tried the low key things I could to deal with it, and it's not really helping.

This is what it looks like -
Right around his groin area, including on his penis and scrotum he had some areas that looked red and a bit raw - almost like scratches. They didn't look like skin was really broken at first, I just thought he had scratched himself (his nails can be really sharp) during diaper changes. He does have 1 tiny open sore just to one side and behind his scrotum, that I think came from acidic poo.
His legs though, that's another matter entirely, and that's been going on for weeks, whereas the groin has only been a few days. They're bright red and leathery, in a sort of half moon shape where the outside of the crotch of his dipe hits his thighs. In the morning it tends to be just a light pink and the skin is soft, but by bedtime they're bright red again and leathery - just today they actually started flaking a bit.

So this is what I've tried for the groin. I've tried slathering the affected areas with aloe to encourage them to heal. I've tried powder and changing immediately to keep the area dry. I tried microfleece liners in the dipe when I knew I wouldn't be able to change immediately. And he's been naked the last 2 days in an attempt to clear it all up. The only thing that has had any effect has been naked time - the areas went from red to scabby looking, and the open sore actually scabbed over, although the scab was gone the first time he pooed.
For the legs, I've tried coverless and changing more often. I've tried using wrap covers to keep the wet dipe off his thighs instead of longies/shorties. I've tried aloe. I've tried CO. And then the last 2 days of naked time. The only thing that seems to make a difference is at night I coat it with CO and put him in a pair of longies, tucking the wool between the dipe and his thigh. By morning they're just pink again and the skin is more tender instead of red and leathery. But a few hours awake and they're back to red and leathery, even if I coat them with CO at every diaper change.

On top of whatever is causing this to continue, he appears to be latex sensitive - one of his covers with FOE on the legs seems to have been what started the leg rash. And the food reaction he's had in the last week hasn't helped the rashes, I'm sure. But at this point I'm at a loss with what to try next. Anyone have any brilliant suggestions? I've actually been thinking about swabbing the area down with BM because I don't have any better ideas... is that crazy?

I have ordered a few pocket dipes so that no wetness will be exposed to his skin at all, in the hopes that that'll help it clear up - they should arrive tomorrow. But beyond that I'm stumped.

We had the same thing around here months ago it sounds like it's maybe a yeast rash we used yogurt to clear it up the first time the second time it was a combo of yogurt and antifungal cream. Hope your little guy's feeling better soon!

I spent pretty much the whole month of July stressing over a rash DD (5 mo) had. Hers sounds somewhat similar to what you're describing. (Although, she never had any open sores, and not really scratches, just the raised, red dry spots.)

After many creams (natural and non-natural ones, yeast cream, hydrocortisone), time in sposies, time coverless, time diaperless, and three trips to the ped, I finally saw a doctor who told me: "It's not that bad." !!! Wish I was told that from the start. To me, it looked bad, but the 6 or 7 patches on her inner thighs & labia (and occasional flaming red butt) were apparently not a big deal compared to what he's seen. It had seemed to be clearing up at one point using Lotrimin, but he said it didn't look like yeast, and it probably helped just by the fact that it was a cream. He said it may come and go, depending on how she reacts to the urine touching her skin, what I have eaten (she's EBF), how & whether she's moving around (she crawls a lot, so the wetness of the dipe rubs her where she was getting the rash). He said even if it is a reaction to something I ate, they'll usually outgrow any sensitivities. (Clearly, he wasn't talking about any serious allergies.) Plus, she didn't seem bothered by the rash AT ALL. She grabs herself sometimes when I change her, but he said she'd do that anyway. After this eye-opening visit, her rash started clearing up almost immediately. So now I have to wonder if my anxiety about it was the main thing fueling it!

She still gets a spot of rash now and then (usually when I forget to change her soon enough) but I don't stress, I just let her dry, change her more frequently for a while, maybe put on some cream (I like the California Baby cream, or Alba unpetroleum jelly), and forget about it. It's going much better now.

Of course, your situation may be totally different, and it's probably best to have it looked at by a doctor who's seen a lot of red bottoms! GL!
