I wanted to do a basement garden this year. Has anyone tried this, especially in zone 4b-5b? My basement is unfinished and chilly, but does have a south facing window. Decent light for a basement. I am wondering what would be the best light to grow veggies in this environment? The cheaper the better, but I do want something that will work.

Also, ideally I could just dig up soil from my raised garden in the yard. It is compost and topsoil. My basement already has some bugs since it is unfinished, but would I be inviting a disaster with garden soil? I don't mind buying 'proper' indoor soil if there is any that is non-toxic, good for growing, and not as expensive as gold.

I was thinking about hydroponics, but wasn't sure if you needed a warmer environment for that. Also, the set up and research for this slightly overwhelms me.
