If I thought that a vegan diet was as healthy for my three cats as a meat based diet, I'd switch them over tomorrow. I do have serious concerns, particularly with the higher risk for urinary tract issues (especially since they are all male and one has already had a urinary tract blockage).
Our dog used to be on a vegetarian diet but is now on a meat based diet. He's prone to seizures and didn't seem to do as well on the vegetarian diet (luckily with medication he is down to about one seizure a year instead of several a week, and we don't really want to mess around with that). I do agree that some dogs seem to thrive on a vegetarian diet, despite it seeming like a meat based diet would be best for them considering what their wild counterparts eat, so I'm not really sure what to think on that subject
I keep an entirely vegan house (including for guests!), except for the pet food. If I could have vegan pets, it would be great. But I have three cats and I'm not willing to compromise their health or rehome them, so it is what it is. Maybe someday I will stop adopting cats in need and choose herbivores instead, but until then I will have to compromise a bit on my morals.
