Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction in 2nd pregnancy

I had sever SPD with my first pregnancy. I ended up being on "modified" bedrest the last 3 months - basically this allowed me to work from home so I didn't have to drive (which hurt! just that little motion of pressing the gas or switching to the brake would bring tears!). Within a month postpartum I was healed.

So now I am pregnant with #2 and I've read that SPD is almost a given and could come earlier. Is that the case with any of you?

Should I be doing anything specific to help this time since I know in advance? Should I exercise in a certain way? Or, should I take it easier, earlier and hope to postpone it? I did chiro last time - should I start that early?

Any advice on lessening, delaying, or coping would be great!

Its worth trying to prevent it (cant hurt at least) but NO it is NOT a given! You could be one of the lucky ones and not get it this time.

But its better to be safe than sorry since it was so severe last time.

I had it the first time, not the second...so there is hope!!! I would start whatever you can early, ie, the chiro. Any pregnancy pilates in your area? Congrats!

I had it the third time and not the first two times. I am two weeks away from when I first started feeling it with the last one and I am on edge. I am still running and moving just fine so far but I am slightly paranoid. It really ruined the last pregnancy for me and no one understood the pain.

I need to go see the chiropractor soon to keep everything loose down there.

My mild SPD lasted two years past DS's birth, and with this one (#2 to make it past the first trimester), it started up around 15 weeks. It is still very very mild, and I think two different things are helping - chiro and Pilates. The Pilates (weekly, on machines, semi-private lessons) are what helped it go away in between pregnancies.

I also just bought the book, "Relieving pelvic pain during and after pregnancy" (recommended by someone on this board a few months ago) which has great simple exercises that I believe are also helping.

Definitely do what you can to PREVENT - see your chiro starting now, and every two weeks...more often as you need it. I've been going every two weeks, but think it is time to move to every ten days, as my adjustments aren't lasting as long.

Mine has started earlier each pregnancy. This is my 3rd, and it started around 12 weeks. Based on my history of that and some other things, my chiro thinks I just have an over-abundance of relaxin when I'm pregnant. If you can get to a chiro who understands the condition, it can make a world of difference. I wouldn't be able to walk at this point without mine.
