Is it possible to do "tandem lite"?

I'm pg with#4. #3 will be 25 months at this baby's birth. My other 2 weaned during pregnancy at about 2. I have never had a desire to tandem nurse but have always been open to it should my already nursing child not fall effortlessly into weaning before the birth.

This time as in the other times, my son is easing into weaning with no issues. However, I really dread giving up the nurse to sleep at nap time. It's quick and easy and I'm not looking forward to the long drawn out process of napping without nursing. Bed time takes over an hour and I just don't have that kind of time during the day. Besides, I find it extremely irritating.

Has anyone had sucess with a toddler only nursing to bed after a new baby arrives? Or should I expect for my son's interest to reignite when this new milk comes in?

Please share your experience!

My DS turned 3 a few days after DD was born and towards the end of pregnancy I set some limits on his nursing - during the reading of one book on waking on the morning and after nap (on days I was not working). We gave continued these limits since her birth and it has worked fairly well. For the first two weeks or so of her life, however, he did ask to nurse about a thousand times per day but each time I gently reminded him, "you can nurse after nap" and after the newness of his sister wore off, he has accepted the routine. I also remind him that she ONLY gets milk, so we need to save enough for her, and remind him of all the cool big kid foods he gets to eat.

My DD#1 was 3 when DD #2 was born. For about a year or so we had the rule of nursing only in the morning upon waking, at nap (or once in the afternoon if she didn't nap that day), and before bed. I was a little more lenient when the baby first came home, but now that is the schedule we stick to all the time. It has worked for us. She asks to nurse other times, but I firmly and gently remind her of our rules.

My first two started nursing more when the next was born but my third did the opposite. He still nurses, but once dd was born he stopped nursing to sleep and started going to sleep by himself and just asks to nurse randomly in the day (about once or twice) and literally doesn't nurse for more than a few seconds... (swallows once or twice)...

So yes, it is possible...

It depends, to a large degree, the temperment of the child. Personally, if a gentle weaning is possible during pregnancy, I think that would be preferable to the gamble of what will happen after the baby comes.
