A twofer: beets and urine color, and splinters, oh my!

My ds (3 y.o.) had red beets for the first time yesterday, and today his potty was very colorful--both urine and bm. Is there something there that I need to be aware of? I know there have been conversations about beets as a sort of litmus test, but am not sure if those conversations apply to children, or what the general consensus is. I do know that ds has dairy and egg sensitivities, perhaps others, but we haven't been able to sort everything out yet.

Question the second; ds has an amazing ability to find splinters with his feet. Usually, they're small and shallow and easy to remove with tweezers. Yesterday, he stepped on a horse chestnut and ended up with half a dozen spines stuck in his foot. I was able to get them all out, I thought, but today he said his foot was still sore, and it looks like there is a spine that's still there pretty well under the skin. We soaked his foot in salt water (no epsom salts at the moment), and I don't see any signs of infection--is there something else we should be doing?

TIA!

The litmus test that beets reveal is low stomach acid. This could be caused by low zinc, and could indeed be a primary factor in why he developed food sensitivities in the first place. It could also mean he has other intolerances yet to be uncovered.

All that from one little veggie.

Personally, discovering intolerances and probiotics improved both my stomach acid and bile flow.

I would be swabbing with iodine several times a day to prevent infection and continue soaking to try to get them out.
