Crying in her sleep?

So, last night my 1 month old daughter (sleeping right next to me) starts crying... screaming, in the middle of the night. My husband and I were sound asleep, and of course I shot up out of bed to see what was the matter. I couldn't find anything wrong! She was crying and asleep!

She hardly ever cries at night. She will wiggle around and fuss when she needs to nurse, and I roll over to feed her. This really scared DH and I. I comforted her, called her name, and she fell back asleep as quickly as this started.

Any clue what this was?

My son (who's now 3 m.o.) has done that a couple of times. I think it must be either that he's having a bad dream, and/or remembering his birth (he had a long, difficult one).

It can be heartbreaking. I don't know if it's a bad dream, gas pain, or what. I just cuddle them until they snap out of it.

My 1-month old does it from time to time...in his case I think it is gas, he'll cry and squirm, then fart and go back to sleep.
